Oh yes, couldn't agree more, its a very competitive market, and people will put in totally unrealistic prices just to get the job, which is why I hate doing fixed price quotes. I work on the principle of 1st class customer relations, as well as doing work of the highest standard. Most of my customers I now class as friends, and regard word of mouth as my biggest asset, something my old contacts manager when I was employed, poo pooed as not being necessary, probably the biggest reason for the company going bust and leaving me with the option of trying to get a job at 55 or going out on my own, a decision that took me about 5 mins.

Glad it's working well for you. Still need a 10% 1st Jan price rise mind.

£1400 for a cambelt change? That seems a little OTT. My 3.2 GT was more like £500. I thought the GTA had the same engine, and the 147 was very similar to the

Be interested to know what the difference is?

The cambelt by itself is broadly around the same as Jamie Porter's prices - the clutch will need doing so it's best to do both at the same time considering the labour. And it's due a water pump etc.

100% - I've 2 mates, ones in windows/kitchens/ bathrooms and last resort plastering, the other in extensions, neither are "greedy" but earn a good living as people are prepared to wait to get a quality job, both have 12 month+ work in front of them. i've another mate who adjusts price on drive, front door and cars on drive, his moral compass swings a bit.....sometimes has no work.......

Hence why I have a 16 year old Ford Focus sitting on my drive!! Knew it was good for something.

I have been prey to this a couple of
Times. They get very frustrated when I ask them to leave when they take the ****.
When I explain A days labour is a days labour and materials cost the same for everyone they get frustrated when sprung.

Some of the quotes we’ve had for work are just total ****-takes. A Maserati and a fairly new Fiat on the drive definitely don’t help!

So what do you think Capes, become my own boss? My family were restaurateurs for nearly 20 years and retired early, they have never been more happy/relaxed. Being raised in the lifestyle I don't particularly want to go back into it. Launching restaurants is high risk potentially low return with very unsociable hours... I don't mind working long hours but hospitality and catering turns your life upside down! I would know i did it for nearly 10 years... Also if the economy goes to shite people have less disposable income and it's more likely to fail... Beyond that I don't have any other business ideas that don't involve becoming some sort of King Pin (yes I'm thinking Breaking Bad/Heisenburg but I'll probably be more like Jesse lmao)

If you're in lighting sales, I know how tough the market is. It's one of the reasons we don't sell LED direct, we use a third party to do that for us. I was told there are 11,000 led resellers in the UK alone.

Being your own boss could work for you if you have clients who buy from you all the time.
Or you have a plan.

The restaurant business seems to be a contracting sector if you believe what The Caterer magazine says.

As I said before. You need a plan. And something ideally recession proof. Without getting into the Brexit argument, I think we have another recession around the corner because of it. Or a slow down at least.

And lots to go according to the pundits. VAL are up 100% today :D

Are you in?

I jumped in when it dropped a bit to 60% gains.

Hold for a bit and I'll take out my investment for a free ride.

Ah **** missed the boat again I was going to buy a couple LTC last week, how long do you think the bullish trend will carry on for Wattie?

Tell me about it mate, I am working for one of the top lighting companies in the world and we have a very strong presence in the UK... achieved growth this year but many of our competitors on the same level have lost 25-50% of their budget this year and I'm hearing that they are laying people off. 2017 has been one of the toughest years with all of the budget/cheap lighting manufacturers gaining a stronger hold because the investors are encouraging "value engineering" on everything... although I don't see the sense in it why change the specification on your £3,000,000+ construction project to save £5k on a £70k lighting scheme when the investor probably won't even see the majority of that saving?

But yes you are correct my own boss or not I need a decisive plan, I have been considering Project Manager roles and maybe going into a role involving buying or selling land which could be easier to get into than the former.
