Never been to either.

My advice is to go to the one where the sun is hottest and the beer is the coldest.

Maldives is lovely, check your season though (as cyclones are common) and if possible get an ocean cabin as mozzies can be a pest on the beachfront if you’re on an island.

I asked a mate the same question the other week (he's been to both).

He said the Maldives if you just want to switch off and do nothing (unless you do a lot of scuba diving).
Seychelles if you want a slightly livelier place. But not that much livelier.

The Seychelles offers more variety as the islands are very different, so if you want variety go to the Seychelles on an 'Island Hopping' holiday but spend as little time as possible on Mahe.

The Maldives you tend to pick one resort and stick to it, the resort is likely to be better than on the Seychelles but there is a lot less to do but nothing wrong with that if you just want to relax.

My personal favourite for an island holiday would be the Spice Islands off Zanzibar, the island of Mnemba is probably the most magical place I have ever been to!

Good idea. Zanzibar and around is pretty amazing. Stone Town not so much but the beaches and some of the lodges are fantastic. It looks like this from 7 miles up:

Maldives is lovely, if you like doing zip, or you like scuba diving. I'm in the latter camp. Would go nuts if I had to sit on a sun lounger on a beach all day, with almost no one on it, under a palm tree, with my feet in sand as soft as talcum powder, staring out into the blue lagoon, with the waves gently lapping the shore, sunshine overhead, the odd cloud in the sky, trying to decide when to have the first beer of the day, and knowing that tomorrow is likely to be the same again! :)

Have been many times in the summer (off season) and have been generally lucky with the weather. If it rains, it rains, but you get wet underwater anyway...

Been to the Maldives and if relaxing doing nothing in stunning location is your thing it's great. The lagoons are superb for snorkelling and lots of scuba stuff close by. We loved it but couldn't do more than a week.

Zanzibar is great, the feel of the old trading location it was and once again great scuba. Never been to the Seychelles although it is on the list once the smalls grow up and move out.

The first and only time I went to the Seychelles I got married. I shan't be going back. Still, it was absolutely beautiful and I mustn't hold those wonderful islands responsible for my own stoopidity.

Went to the Seychelles about 20 years ago, Beau Vallon. I reckon it must have rained 7 days out of 14. Not like Caribbean rain but pissing down all day rain. On the way back, talked to some people who had stayed about 5 miles away and they said they had had lovely weather. So it really depends on where you stay. There was an Island called Silhouette which had a cloud sitting above it every day. Nice place though and nice food. Went to Bird Island for a couple of days which was very nice in a no shoes sort of way. Snorkelling was superb.

I was in the Seychelles with work in May for 3 weeks and I loved it. Stayed at the Savoy Hotel and the staff were top notch. Let me know if you stay there and I will let them know you are coming....

I went deep sea fishing with a guy called Gerry who has been doing expeditions for ages and it was a trip I will never forget. Stunning water for snorkelling too.

You can stay in Beau Vallon or on one of the Islands like La Digue close by.

Some pics...

Looking for ideas in the Pacific for next summer. Miss Eb will be in Tonga, hoping to see hump back whales in her spare time. Plenty of diving around there, but where else to go island wise?

Went to Maldives last June. To go there you must be one of two types of people: you love doing nothing but relaxing or you enjoy water activity (snorkelling, big game fishing, dolphin watching, etc). The island I was on was only 500m long, so you could walk round it in 15mins.

The white dots in the picture are water bungalows. The reef edge is south facing, next land fall - Antarctica, 5000 miles due south.

There were about 70 water bungalows.

Stingrays swimming under the hotel bar every night. Saw six at one time, all attracted by the lights.

Decided on Rasdhoo Atoll in the Maldives, as the diving was highly recommended.
