So if you do exhaust mods on your car, do you have to inform your insurance company?

As they then don't comply with the original EU Factory specifications.. ie, It's then modified

Just a thought, as I was thinking of buying some second hand Larini back boxes for my old 3200GT

When I installed Larinis in my 3200 I informed the insurance company and the premium was the same. I called and told them that my old one was worn out and found a replacement at Larini, very straightforward.

Back to viewing a 4200.

I called into Richard Grace today as I was in the area. Had a great chat and a decent coffee. We then toured his stock;

If anyone is genuinely looking for a good...neigh perfect 4200 you will not find a better one that the one he has in stock.

The photos do not do this low mileage car justice...its mint and despite my best efforts I could not find fault with it despite its years. The darrk ox blood leather is much darker in real life and suits the car well.

Added to this a service book with a stamp for every year really makes it stand out crom the crowd of poor and poorly maintained cars oit there for a couple of grand less.

Looking for a 4200??? Go take a look...its like a new Maser for just over £23k

I think there is a spot of dust on one of the wheels ;)

I am astonished it has not sold by now.

I went to another dealer (R & W) a few weeks ago to look at an Gransport. The owner told me that 4200s were not selling at all and he wouldn’t buy them. Might just be a winter thing, but...

It's fair to say that Dec/Jan is the quietest time of year for second hand luxury car sales. Good time to negotiate hard and grab a bargain though.

R&W have no presence in the world of Maserati - I'd steer clear of them. The usual boring old BMW's and Porsches are more their thing.

I think part of the problem with 4200s is they are getting to that age, even the latest ones, where parts fail just down to normal wear and tear and as Maserati parts are not cheap buyers are wary. All cars seem to go through this phase before they become deemed as "classic" where buyers are prepared to accept parts availability & pricing as part of owning such a car.

That said the 4200 that Dicky has looks amazing and shouldn't be impacted by this fact.

I didn’t particularly like their GS, but they did manage to move it on a week after I saw it. They did neglect to tell me that it had been in an accident though. And couldn’t explain a 3 year gap in the full service history. Maybe I was being picky!

I know. I was going to see it but I realised that if I didn’t buy a GS, I would always regret it.

Picky, I would say diligent which anyone buying a Maserati should be

You can always go back to a GS.

At some point I think I'll own a GS. but more than happy with my GTS to consider a change. Maybe in addition at some point.

Yeah I could but more likely to go for something newer next time. I've had a number of BMWs over the years and every time I've not bought the fastest, I've regretted it. So I thought I'd apply that here. I know there's not much difference but its in the mind. Will give me time to get back into owning a Maserati and then can see what the future holds.

We have already come to that crossroad with all the coupe range.

The poor examples have gone one way and the good and low mileage the other.

Although we can hope to go back to a model at some time the likelihood of finding one with low miles, excellent history and great condition will get harder and harder...and expensive.

Richard example is in my mind one of the last on that road...affordable and prestine.

All makes sense to me, the market will continue to polarise.

On other comments a three year service gap on a 15 year old car would not necessarily put me off as it needs to be taken in the round considering all other things. Also I agree that as the cars get old things will fail as wear & tear which could have a big impact on ownership costs for those mainly in it for the profit.

Ok, getting closer...

Deal is agreed subject to an inspection. Just want to get the engine / cats checked really to make sure there is no break up to date... so I guess compression test, emissions read outs and diagnostics read. I'm happy everything else is straight (bar some basic bits acceptable at the price).

I need to speak to them on Monday but John Holland seem like a good shout unless anyone has any direct recommendations otherwise?

http://www.johnhollandsales.co.uk/

The 'supercar' place mentioned earlier have very little web presence, can't be found on street view, and don't have a proper answerphone so unless someone can vouch for them to be good I won't go there. John Holland look like they will be pricey but they sell a lot of exotics and performance cars so they must have good experience.

I will then probably look at changing to Euro spec manifolds in due course anyway... and maybe some valved boxes... but that will be another thread (I've read a lot already but will have to get to a meet as everyone's definition of loud is different... I'll be on the quieter end of the spectrum but even so, the stock setup is somewhat muted for such a glorious engine).

Got a bit of a to do list in mind already and will probably do as much as possible myself so will try to track on here when I can. I'm lucky to finally have a decent garage which will make it possible. Very excited... a ten year wait draws closer to fruition!

P.S. I will post separately but I will have a 2006 Audi A6 Quattro 4.2 v8 for sale soon. Not Italian granted but a very rapid (350 bhp) and super practical car if anyone is looking for such. Pretty rare... at least two thirds of an RS6 for a fraction of the cash. Gets to 60 in less than 6 seconds and has as big a boot as our Range Rover. Needs a little prep but will be good to go mid Feb. Don't clutter this thread... if that sounds of any interest drop me a PM otherwise I will post more separately when it's ready to go.

http://www.supercar-centre.co.uk/ in Sheffield would be my preference for an inspection, as said earlier.
They are known Maserati specialists in the area. Ex. Main dealer Ferrari/Maserati mechanics set up on their own, originally called themselves Millbrooke Cars.
I would be surprised if John Holland even has the necessary sd2 diagnostic equipment.

EDIT: Ignore what I have just posted, just done a search and they went bust 3 weeks ago. Shame.

Another option would be Italia Autosport in Meltham, although I know they don't have a sd2 diagnostic either, much to my annoyance only being 10 minutes away!

That figures... on web presence they've been dead longer. Shame but all things end for a reason.

To be honest... assuming results were good I'd be happy seeing good compression figures and EGR readings. SD data would be a bonus but not essential to me if that checked out. Diagnostics data is easily wiped so a clear read only means its clear in the moment anyway. You can't fake PSI from the cylinders though... nor really the gas coming out the back.

I'll speak to Italia Autosport. thanks for the link. Might be on the edge of suitable distance but close enough to explore. Cheers
