Identifying GranTurismo gearbox variants

Hi

I'm thinking of getting a GranTurismo, probably a Sport with Auto as my driving will be a 50/50 mix of city and open road.

I understand the GranTurismo has several variants:

Auto
Auto with MC Software
MC Autoshift (MY2014- current)
MC Shift
MC Stradale

Ads on Autotrader seem to quote mixtures of these terms in the titles and descriptions.

Can the different variants be identified from the photos?

Cheers

Yes as a rule if it has the 1 and R button then it is an MC Shift box (robotic manual) with associated clutch costs. This box offer the most immersive experience and is a joy to drive. The Auto cars (ZF box) came with a gear stick type selector so look in the interior shots in the ads to determine for sure. The later auto (MC Autoshift) is the best of both Worlds for the later cars as most post 2014 cars were ordered with this box. All MC Stradales had the MC Shift box with even quicker race mode changes.

Assuming the MC Autoshift has a gear stick, on 2013/2014 cars is it possible to determine whether it has the ZF box or MC Autoshift?

Is it a case of if it’s a GranTurismo S with a gear stick it has the ZF Auto box and if it it’s a GranTurismo Sport with a gear stick it has the MC Autoshift box?

Yes, and if it is a 2012MY car (pre facelift) with the Sport Pack option, indicated by oval tail pipes, lipped rear boot and side skirts, then that too will have MC Autoshift software.

For the OP, basically what looks like an auto gearstick is an auto gearbox car. All Sport auto cars (2013MY onwards) have the MC Autoshift software - recognise them by the changed front spoiler and more sporty looking seats. As Dicky says some 2012MY auto cars have this software as well. So basically you have four choices:

GTS - MC gearbox, built late 2008 to summer 2012
GTS Auto - small number of late ones have MC Autoshift, built summer 2009 to summer 2012
Sport - MC gearbox (very few built), built late 2012 to 2016
Sport Auto - 'MC Autoshift', built late 2012 to 2016

I don't like the MC gearbox but plenty on here do, as ever make the choice for you.

Spotted that this morning, rare cars, good value that, although weird that Sytner are selling a Maserati in Nottingham but not from their Maserati dealership.

Don't they tend to sell cars through 'Direct' that are too expensive to bring up to Maserati imposed main dealer standards? Looks cheap to me too especially given the miles mind I don't do black.

Yes they do. I viewed a 2011 GTS at Sytner Birmingham. Their salesman admitted that they sell cars through their "direct" channel when it is not commercially viable to be brought up to rigorous Sytner main Maserati dealer standards.
The experience wasn't great, no PPI allowed on their premises (cited liability insurance issues or some other b u l l s h I t ) and refused to take vehicle to a local specialist for PPI.

I'm glad someone has explained this, as I was having a look at Autotrader earlier and some vendors tend to me economical with the truth on gearbox. Especially (deliberately) confusing MC Sport Line with MC Gearbox...

Thanks for all the replies.

So basically all the GranTurismo Autos have the same gearbox, but some have the MC software.

If driving in Auto mode, are they all identical or does the different software make them behave differently to the ones without that software?

If it's software - can these things be reflashed or swapped? It's probably more complicated than that though....

I was told it couldn't be done when I enquired of a specialist

MC Autoshift changes gear quicker; but you'd do very well to notice when driving in Auto mode.

Remember if you want a Sport then it will have the revised software so job done. Whether you want to spend less and get a GTS Auto with or without the MC shift software can only be decided by you. Personally I would drive a regular GTS Auto like I have and a Sport to help make your mind up as you can spend ages on forums talking about the nuances of small things which you may not even notice in the real world. Your decision might be decided by spec and colour choices in and out as supply is not that great.

OK....so I am confused...I have read through this thread and are many of you saying there is NO easy way to tell the type of gearbox shifter at all?

I bought my 2016 GT Sport (USA) new from the dealer....would it say anything on the window sticker?

Some people are saying that you'd be good to tell the difference between different gearboxes when driving in automatic mode.

Who drives in Auto?

Thought long and hard about retrofitting flappy paddles so tried to run with manual to get a feel on how it would work. However with gearbox software that that changes up /down if I don't (can't keep it on the red line) it doesn't seem necessary. I have the FD DBW which seems to anticipate things quite nicely though.
