I'm with you and hate getting finance.

However a couple of times I've take cheap finance whilst waiting for money to hit my bank and then paid the finance off when it did.

Is it really - maybe I should consider it, always considered finance an abhorrent anathema, but if it gets you something you covet..........

Really? You never heard of rent a depreciating asset? HOw do you think most of the cars on the road are funded?

It's easy stick 15k down on that blue GTS and pay £480 a month for about 28 months and have a balloon at the end of it where you get your 15k back and can sell the car privately etc. It's an absolute no brainer.

I've heard about, read about them, but never used them,
Which is why I've always had dull family cars I guess.....

Only finance I have ever tended to have is mortgage. For cars & everything I save up first and know I can afford it when I pay for it in cash. Old school me. Easy to keep it all under control & not out of control which is why we have the highest levels of personal debt ever seen.

It may work & be useful for many but many others can't be trusted to look after themselves so get themselves in trouble. Some people need to be protected from themselves.

Phil, Your into a hiding to no where with those sorts of ideas mate... How many times have you been decreed bankrupt..

You pay cash for everything, if you ain't got it you don't have it!

Different Generations Dave see things differently.
Me worked all my life and never got anything for nothing.
Divorce has certainly seen me give loads away so I'm guessing Jesus still wants me for a Sunbeam ;)

Is that true for mortgages too Dave? You live in the olden days mate. Even my old school parents (probably younger than you though) have just bought their new car with some pcp finance.

I've never had a problem with a loan on a car , last car i bought i borrowed £7500 over 3 years and the interest was £500

Credit cards and payday loans are what people need saving from

Renting a car can be ok as long as you understand that £300 a month could end up being £500 a month if your insurance doesn't pay out for any reason , you didn't take out gap and write it off or bring it back full of body damage

The mechanic i use had a customer for years in old cars then went for a new fiat panda, wrote it off , insurance paid out £1000 less than he owed on it , no gap so now he's got no car and a £1000 debt

Just a brief update on my initial attempts at QP ownership

I spoke with Ewan, and am viewing his car this weekend. So thanks to all you initial contributors for your help and suggestions.

As for the two pages of discussion about car financing..........not so sure!

Lol, I am the same,
But,
Welcome to the Soviet Republic of Dean!!! Haha...
I know...stuck in my ways. I got finance on the XJ all done through the business. That was a disaster. Was told I could settle the finance at any point and just pay pro rata interest to that point. The Directors I brought in a few years back that went sour & caused me untold grief meant I had to sell it to release any cash I could get my hands on to keep the business afloat. The interest thing is right for private individuals but not for businesses & had to pay all 42 months of interest even though it was only halfway through the term. Good old Santander. Won't use them again....and unlikely finance.

Good thread drift! The world runs on well leveraged finance, my only mistake was to learn that too late, no doubt I would have done far better with well some well chosen credit along the way. Consumer debt, impulse buying, credit cards with nonsensical small print: now that's the dangerous stuff!

I once lost £30k on a 911 turbo in a year and swore never to buy a high value car again with my savings. I have used finance ever since and will not change that, unless a lottery win renders any loss inconsequential. I'm with Phil on this, rent a depreciating asset.

I do own my Mini but that's not worth very much so not the same decision. If it's only worth £5k, I can only lose £5k and I'm Ok with that.
