I do wonder how much can be saved by supplying your own service items if you take your car to a specialist for the service. I think most apply a fixed price for servicing and suspect you may lose any discount/goodwill factored into that price. If it were my business, I would know how much I need to cover my overheads and of course profit, and would naturally want to see that one way or another.

I'm surprised that a garage would let you supply fluids / service parts, it would get messy if there were any problems afterwards when the blame game starts.

My thinking is pay for a service and stamp or DIY

When I worked at another airport I had the joy of managing the Motor Transport section as well and it's a real eye-opener. We used to buy oil in 240l drums but charge the rate of 5 litre cans. Not only that but the motor factors parts knew which part would fit which other vehicle. So the fact that half the Maserati parts could be sourced from FIAT/ALFA parts bins is well known. The dealers/independents don't want you to know this and charge you a huge mark-up. Interestingly they would also know by experience of supply which parts fail regularly such as VW-Audi -SEAT-Skoda 1.9TDI turbos, Renault petrol engines, Vauxhall crank position sensors, Renault Diesel Engines, Mercedes A class engines (made by Renault) Nissan van engines (Also Made by Renault!).

I am an authorised Shell service centre and buy my oil in 209 litre drums. I cannot buy it for that Eurocarparts price which is very cheap.

However, my oil can be traced back to the Shell refinery and comes with a tribology report from the lab. That way I can be sure that the correct stuff is going into my customers cars. I'm not saying that the ECP oil isn't any good but I need to be sure of where my oil comes from and ECP cannot supply that info.

For the above reason I will not use customer supplied oil. I deal with enough engine failures as it is.

The 10l I bought arrived today. I also got a pouch to hold a 1l bottle to go in the back of the Alfa Spider. Can't be too careful with the Twin Spark engines. The discount code worked for me, up in York, but I reckon I only got 35%.

That's all I could manage about 35% but nowhere close to the claimed £14.92 others have achieved, so I ordered mine from carparts4less which looks very similar to Eurocarparts and mister auto websites!

Well said Voicey.
ECP have been caught in a couple of scandals that I remember of.

Carparts4less is owned by eurocarparts usually cheaper too.

I have spoken to Shell UK and have sent an email with my batch code for them to prove authenticity and comment on its makeup in comparison with dealer supplied 209L drums, watch this space...

So far, they have only confirmed that ECP is on Shells list as a authorised reseller of which they supply stock.

OK, after several tests and products traces and emails I have the answers from Lee at Shell:

Is the Shell Helix 5w40 I purchased from Eurocarparts genuine:

YES (Lee@Shell: Product codes were received and verified and ECP is on the list of UK stockists/suppliers of Shell Oil Products)

Is the Shell Helix 5w40 I purchased from Eurcarparts the same mix and construction as the dealer supplied 209L drums:

YES (Lee@Shell: Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 is a Shell grade, if the product in question is Shell Helix Ultra 5W40, then it will be the same product)

If a customer supplies Shell Helix 5w40 to be used by the servicing dealer, can the dealer decline to use it stating it is not the same as their 209L drums of the same product

YES & No (Lee@Shell: Its down to the discretion of the dealer but the oil, both customer or dealer supplied Shell Helix 5w40 is the same grade of oil so there is no reason for the dealer to refuse it)
