That is a fair old rattle. Is it louder near the engine or towards the rear? It sounds like it stops when the clutch engages, is that right?

Have you tried letting it idle until the clutch releases?

The car drives fine (I think) it pulls through the gear range efficiently and at speed. I drove it back yesterday 40 mile trip. Its only in low gears and when I start the car.
Its just had a fresh mot last week. If the cats were knackered, wouldn't that cause a failure or an advisory?

It sounds like a very noisy lay shaft bearing. These can get noisy if the car if the car is left in N with the engine running, but go quiet if you go into gear.

I think you are right, its probably not the cats. The MOT should have noted any poor emissions performance, but it should also have noted any loose components like heat shields etc. Were there any advisories at all?

I imagine it is still rattling at speed but is less audible. As Catman says it could be loose heat shields which are much easier to resolve.

Its very tricky to diagnose this sort of stuff from the end of an internet. You are going to have to get it into a garage, preferably a specialist, lift it, run it and listen to it.

You haven't said where you are located. You might be near another owner who can lend a friendly ear.

It does sound exactly like that doesn't it? Its just that its also doing it when pulling away, which doesn't tally.

It just so happens I am going to be in Watford on Thurs and Fri.

Hope you get it sorted in the mean time, but if you want a second set of ears let me know.

Im beginning to think it is the cats. I've read a lot about the 'stones in can' sound. The first video I posted sounds like that.

Update:

1) Heater now working, changed fuse 30amp green. Gets plenty hot in the cabin. Fan speed still low for the windscreen.
2) Changed fuse for folding mirrors - now working great
3) Rattling noise sorted by Autofficina Epsom. Welded the twin skinned manifolds - rattle gone!
4) Changed pollen filter and cleared out all the leaves/gunk
5) Cleared the pipe in drivers footrest. Noticed my carpets were a bit greasy, does that mean the matrix has gone? I dabbed a white tissue to see what colour it would go, it didn't change colour. Doesn't smell of anything either.
6) Is the fan blower flap suppose to close? I noticed that it's spring hinged.

Again, a big thank you to all the help I got from the forum. Knowledge is POWER - V8 POWER!
Special thanks to Zep who dropped by on Friday. Lovely to meet you mate :)

Taste it, if it’s sweet it is indeed antifreeze.

Obviously don’t swallow and rinse and spit.
