Dateless Number plate

I remember reading a book about plates years ago, saying that the numbers aren't legally required to be decimal, and some chaps had Roman numerals on their plates.

I saw pics, the plods weren't happy but the law was clear then. Dunno if it changed but there's some cracking VVVIIVIIVLCM options there..

I had an old Coventry plate in my sights from eBay only today. Something from my youth. Seller pulled it 3 mins before the end time. Clearly didn't think it was going for enough. It now says sold but it isn't as he asked me to make him an offer. Git.

I used to have RW 21 on my old Ford Escort, a typical early 1960's Coventry plate, most were RW or RV, lots of old Jags also have these suffixes..

Yes. Lots of Jags, LR/RR. I could see Browns Lane from my bedroom window. We used to see cras all strapped up with cardboard blasting up the Tamworth rd, they were "in disguise"! VC/WK/RW/KV/DU/HP all Cov numbers - see all the classic C and D types. There's a CVC regsiter for classic RR, mostly ex factory. RW 21 would do very nicely. Ah well, keep looking.

I did a stint at DVLA in Swansea, circa 2010, CP must be a Swansea code, lots of CP10 which really tickled us Unix types...

Got my first speeding ticket there too, second weekend!

We always told be wary of Fords with the 3 digits ending in OO,most Ford fleet / press demo cars had these digits. We once had a 2.9 Sierra 4x4 Estate with an ROO reg which was an ex press car

ED was our local reg and as a kid I could normally spot cars from various places, EK & JP was Wigan, JA was Stockport, KA, KB, KC, KD was Liverpool, NA, NB, NC, ND Manchester, RJ Salford, RL Truro DJ St Helens, BC was Leicester - Forgot how many I can still remember

Nice one David.. I used to bait the test drivers up the Tamworth Rd in the 1970's in my Alfa Sprint GT

It was always well over a ton back down to the Browns Lane gate! :D

There's a new (ish) road in the way now, or a short cut depending on your point of view! Shame the wedge road only has a 40 limit, or it did when I was there last, but it's been a while.

Yea, I still cant believe the Tamworth Road now has a 40 limit!.. I was down there a few weeks ago visiting my mum.

I was real enough .. 48 years ago we used to do 110 plus down there easy chasing the Jag test drivers, same road same houses..

I used to get then down Long Lane!

With some amusement, I've seen that A NOB AML is for sale for just £260, including the fees. Well, it's AN08 AML, buy it still made me smile.

Surprised myself.

Decided that she's staying with us, and planning some pampering and enhancements

Never thought that I'd do this, but N??? MAS is on its way.

Even found a plate manufacturer who adds the Maserati Logo.

Feels quite odd, really.

Good to read Robin... too many pay a fortune to upgrade to a newer model with surprisingly little extra in performance, style or improvement.

It was a shocking trade in price that sealed it. Dealer i bought it from in August 2016 had a Blu 4.7S up which seemed priced right. What he offered constituted such a loss that was far greater by twice it would cost me to have ours completely brushed up: full respray, interior thoroughly breathed over, valved Larini, brakes, and contingency variators.

Ridiculous. Nowhere near a private sale price.

Ba$$tard.

In any event, yesterday's pootle just reinforced how irreplaceable she is

FWIW Robin, I'm with you 100%
I bought my 2008 4.2 a year ago, as a present to myself.
Mainly to put some fun back in my life, following ten years of deteriorating discs and all the fallout that followed.
I'm not attention seeking, but I have always liked to drive cars that are a little different.
Most weeks, driving around the locality, I get a few waves and the odd question or two at the petrol pumps.
This weekend was the North West 200 road races hereabouts and perhaps because of the general festive atmosphere and/or concentration of petrolheads, the attention the car received was completely out of the ordinary.
I couldn't stop at a petrol station or supermarket without getting into a conversation. Twice with Ghibli owners.
Lots of waves from pedestrians. I even got pulled over by a traffic branch car, whose crew just wanted to talk about Maseratis.
I actually spent most of the weekend at home, avoiding the foreign tourists driving around haphazardly.
At the end of the day, it's a completely stock, ten year old sports car. Clearly though, there is something about the sight and sound of Maseratis or maybe Granturismos in particular, that people enjoy seeing in the flesh. It's not unique by any means. But it is different.
