I get the variator clatter sometimes on start...

Re: the phone SIM, it's 2G only so you need to use a company that still uses the 2G masts, I have a Plusnet on in mine and it works. System is pants, but it works.
Yes indeed I use Giffgaff that uses the O2 network that still supports 2G. THREE only uses 3G and above, not 2G anymore.

Do you still have your VagCom stuff? C

'Fraid not. Old HP laptop, genuine VagCom dongle, and latest software all went when I sold the Passat tFSI 2.0L after 10 years ('06MY bought '07 stage 1 to 230bhp) Few months later checked on DVLA and it was SORN, still is. Dunno what new keeper did with it

It's in the shop for overnight so can be started this morning for listen to see whether clatter is so severe that it requires variators done -- I've already got their quote but they're so booked up that I trust they'll only do it and put into their schedule if it really does need doing.

Re: the phone SIM, it's 2G only so you need to use a company that still uses the 2G masts, I have a Plusnet on in mine and it works. System is pants, but it works.

Thanks for that. Did try the Vodafone SIM from my '03MY Vogue that does work in that car. So am assuming the OEM 'phone system in that is also just 2G? Have tried an EE SIM that also comes up with "Telephone not available", Someone else suggested I use a T-Mobile SIM for the same 2G reason. Which is why am wondering whether the module's still there.
Where is it mounted?

There was action (yes, more action ) against VAG group for making their Bluetooth 'phone systems only Nokia compatible. These anti-competitive practices are outlawed under EU free trade law

I have some "knock-off" Vagcom that I never installed as it looked waay too complicated for me, and I hate Windows systems computers....
3 install discs (needs Windows system) USB Bluetooth dongle and OBD reader.
Actually never needed it. Pretty sure it'll be restricted to "x"number of licence/VIN whatever....

Yeah, looks easy enough to buy. Just thinking ahead on the possible car front.....

God knows where I'd find a POS Windows laptop...

The cheeepo Chinese knock off Vag-Com is just that. You can't update it, you can't get all the latest stuff off the CanBus on many VAG cars either. One report I seem to recall actually changed some UK-set parameters to US ones which couldn't then be changed back again and saved.

I bought direct from VAG-Com in the US in their early days (yes, lugging a PC out to the car parked out front, CRT monitor, mouse, AT keyboard, and all the cables, and an extension mains lead with a lumpy multi-way adapter (what would the neighbours think -- I saw them, rustling the lace)

I actually did manage to set my daylight running lights to indicators as running lights, and the folding mirrors. Advertised my availability and over five years got a whole three calls, one a dealer, one a Golf Mk II startup problem, and one for folding mirrors

Going to rallys was interesting -- used to burn off the boyz with their tasteful all black, de-chromed, de-badged, small wheels & lowered Golfs with the W5 engine in them. And baseball caps worn the wrong way round o_O
Only thing was they invariably had uprated their brakes to Brembo. And thats where, against my SEL estate, they always outbraked me <I've wibbled> I'm sure that my QP would do 156 with ease.
Just that I'm 15 years older now...

All the best for the New Year !

Interesting to know it’s based on the Launch x431.

We however will put all efforts into EasyMAS being a “Maserati” only tool unlike Launch etc which are generic multi - vehicle. Our software will contain a small amount of AI based on Maserati parameters and come with good support.

We have the benefit of knowing the Maserati electronics inside out.

Regards Steve
EasyObdTools Ltd.
Just returned the tool to the ebay seller. No Bueno. Patiently waiting for pro version of Easy mas in 2020.

£1,600 to £1,800-ish to fix from an indie. I've had two quotes as high as four grand. Depends on level of scoring of your existing variator units that, if re-usable can be sent away to tool shop for modification (startup oil feed issue). Otherwise they're new units needed two off from Mas main agent

Which head unit have you? Mine's been described as a "Bose" but didn't know they made head units just speakers. Thought until put right they were all Blaunkput. Mine looks like this:

I messed up on the info I posted regarding getting this fixed. Comes of reading too many forums :)
My bad...

For Variators, I've had a quote from Lancaster Maserati who tell me that new items come with a modification update already done:
A000253625 N/STK INTAKE TIMING VARI QTY 2 £229 EA £458 +VAT. (ex-Italy not on the shelf there)
There's a kit of parts to buy with this so £1,271.52 inc VAT in total. In that price there's another part that has to be sent away to stop oil draining back and giving the "clatter" at £360 +VAT. I'm only going on what I've been told and hope I understand what I'm gonna be faced with shelling out. FYI my engine # from V5 is 133944 But it goes like **** off a shovel ;)

I think the occasional variator clatter on dry sump engines is fairly normal - it's the wet sump ones that suffer.

So have we both got "dry sump" engines then?
Helpfully, Wikepedia says: "Initially ("initially" to what, when, which?), the Quattroporte was powered by an evolution of the naturally aspirated dry sump 4.2-litre V8 engine, as used in the Maserati Coupé, with an improved power output of 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp) and new black plastic inlet manifold instead of an aluminium cast one."
Although Wikepedia gives listings for north America market, the QP DuoSelect, QP Automatica, QP Sport GT S, and an entry marked plain QP had the 4244 cc V8 engine in it manufactured '03MY to '12MY. My V5 gives my Varient as AB engine 4244cc.

Here is where the info gets hazy: some refer to all 4.7litre as wet sump, while Wikepedia only refers to wet sump as: "F136UC 4.2-litre engines on automatic cars were converted to use a wet sump oiling system, as did the later 4.7-litre, codenamed F136Y." No dates of these manufactured are given. So, how to recognise a F136UC engine?

My Vehicle Information Sheet only gives the engine number, not the type, as does the front page sticker in the owners' service book. I've got no other invoices or info

I could be wrong but I thought all DS's had 4.2 dry sump and autos 4.2 and 4.7 wet sumps? The dry sumpers have red cam covers, the wets blue.

I thinking the repositioning of the engine with the auto box up front dictated this. I also thought the dry sump was needed to keep the engine low in the frame but I've no idea what they did to find room for the wet sump later.

Someone here will correct/know!

I have the same NIT too - it's Blaupunkt. Yours is saying TEL. OFF though, and you have no sim in the holder. TBH though the whole thing is pants like the sat nav, I have a six quid a month PlusNet sim in mine just cos I can and no one has ever called me on it and neither have I made a call!

Wha? Another term to confuse the already confuzzed RichardSEL. What's a DS?

So many descriptions -- I'm convinced the SIM I used is 2G from Vodafone coz it works in my '03MY Vogue. When I put it in the Mas slot I still get the "Telephone is not available" message on screen when "Tel" is selected. Mind you, went through the trial of the fitted Navtraq too. The remote's in the car although the help desk couldn't tell me what the button on the remote's for ;-)) Not that they're trying to sell me a fresh system. Oh no, that'd be cynical :p

DS is Duo-Select, aka Cambiocorsa, MC Shift, e-Gear, F1. The manual gearbox with a robotised clutch, so no clutch pedal and full-on paddle-action...

Again I'm not sure but it looks like yours is an auto as I cant see the M/A (Manual/Auto) button which really means Paddles/No Paddles

Here's my NIT, shows phone as 'live' with Eir Mobile, and 28mpg although I've no idea how I managed to travel 4.3 kms in 2 seconds. Not a great pic but shows phone working and sim in slot and different buttons on right, mine top down are M/A, Sport, Ice one I think and MSP off which I've never dared to. Mine's a DS...

All 4.7lt are wet sump.
All 4.2lt with an autobox are wet sump.
All GT's are therefore wet sump.
That just leaves the 4.2lt with the cambiocorsa/duoselect that are drysump as fitted to the 42/GS/QP.
I think I was right then! Just leaves the question of the cam cover colours and why they went wet sump with the auto - must be engine position and there's still no way anyone will convince me the autos have a better front/rear balance than the DS's, it defies physics.........
