This may have already been asked and I missed it. Can a British Citizen go to Europe for more than 90 days at a time from 1/1/2021? What do people with homes there do?
I read yesterday that it would be a maximum stay of 90 days.

Am I right in thinking that if a deal isnt agreed by this Sunday ( looks highly unlikely given the EU's unwavering position) and we exit the EU with no deal on the 31st Dec, that negotiations will still be continuing into 2021 until there is an acceptable deal? I dont think it's just this Sunday or its game over... forever? So is the worst that we could be looking at is an interim period where we are trading on WTO rules until a deal is agreed?

The deadline will likely be extended over and again. Although the rules I believe have to change on Jan 1, there's nothing (that I am aware of) that means a deal can't be concluded at any time.

Having spent 31 years doing nothing else but negotiating complex multi £million equipment supply contracts, one thing I learnt very early on is to have the key decision makers in the room who you are negotiating with. No disrespect to Barnier or the EU President but they are just the 'messengers' for Macron and Merkel to hide behind. What's needed is all of them in the room to thrash this out. The top decision makers, fully empowered to make decisions for their respective corners, then they might just come out with a deal.
I actually feel sorry for Frost and Barnier to be put in this position without the power and authority to go with it. Delegation means exactly that, delegate the authority and empower those who know how to negotiate and come out with a workable soln.

Part of our retirement plans is to buy a house in France. Not as an investment but somewhere is and the family can use as and when. It’s looking increasingly likely that this isn’t going to happen in the short term if at all. It’s a shame really as we’ve been visiting France once or twice a year for the last 30 years and have always fancied having a base there.

Portugal for has hinted it will allow longer stays than 90 days .

So what about for example, one or two people on here who live there 24/7. They have to sell their home and come back?
Not for me it's the other way around.
I have been here 2 years now and in the system for tax and health etc.
My house in the UK going through now.
We're lucky as we have NZ residency too and house there as well.
Plan is to sell that and enjoy life here more.

Maximum stay of 90 days from the 1/1/21.
To be exact, it’s 90 days in a rolling 180. This has always been the law, it’s not a new thing that is coming in 2021. It is just that from 2021 onward entry and exit will be logged, unlike now. That is why so many expats have been in a panic for the past year or so because they are already living permanently and illegally in Europe and have been rushing to get residency before 2021. But note, once you take residency you can then only come back into the UK for 90 days in any rolling 180 days. It works both ways, always has but was never policed by immigration.

Have you asked yourself the question why they don’t want to be in the room ?
