Four years left to buy a new ICE car

As an aside yesterday I saw a new 718 Cayman 4.0 GTS in yellow. Loved it but is it worth sinking £80k in something like this now?

A friend of mine is waiting for a build slot for one. Just a slot!!!!
He's been on the list for 18 months!

I imagine with that kind of wait the residues will be pretty good.

They sound like they are a stunning car but Porsches' usually depreciate quite a bit in the first two years then level out. People tell you they don't but they forget the £20k of options they put on the car.

I'm not sure which way values will go 5, 10, 15 years out. If all depends whether you get pelted with a squash or some such if you drive past a vegan cafe in the nice part of town. The rare cars will do well but the question is how rare is rare?

My mate is after a GT4 and they've lost very little from new. Even the old GT4's are commanding strong money.
But as you say. How rare is rare?

And also, rather importantly range is about total energy capacity (and efficiency) where as acceleration is rate of energy conversion.

Fair point, there isn’t a direct trade off. I meant in terms of innovation. Focus a bit less on rate of energy conversion and a bit more on maximising efficiency and capacity.

Honestly, I would like an electric SUV type car alongside the Spyder, but I don’t have a garage or drive and charging in the street is a non-starter at the moment (literally). If I could charge my car once a fortnight or once a month, or charge it in 10 minutes, I’d get one now. I’d plan on keeping it for at least 10 years.

I have to confess my take is that they already are spending way more on efficiency. If things like flush door handles and weight are making significant improvements then that indicates a pretty high focus.

I was under the impression that the crazy conversion pretty much was a by-product. I am no expert at all

It took me a while to figure out why American road tests were so much bigger, faster and more chocolatey. The I realised that their standing start acceleration stats are not done from a standing start....that's not cricket.

Back on the Tesla 3 point, I'm surprised that a few people missed the open goal and assumed that I meant the Tesla was better than a 911 which it clearly is not. However, if some zero design company can put this sort of drivetrain in a car at a reasonable price then someone will come along sometime soon and join the dots in a more attractive way. As an aside yesterday I saw a new 718 Cayman 4.0 GTS in yellow. Loved it but is it worth sinking £80k in something like this now?
Someone's already done 964 – Evarrati I believe.
150-mile range though. Bit pointless as I'm sure that 150 will become 15 if you drive it properly.

Mind you ICE cars can be the same. Drained a V10 M6 at Longcross in an hour at an indicated 4MPG.

CGTS should hold its value in the short term, but predicting the value of expensive ICE cars in the long term is pure guesswork. They could sky rocket or fall off a cliff once they are no longer being produced. Think you have to buy with eyes wide open to the future value risk and buy for the original reason that people bought high price specialist cars, because they wanted to enjoy driving them, looking at them and looking after them!

Interestingly, as more EV's go on line, will fuel cost fall, like last year when down to nearly a £1/lt as demand was less than supply?

I doubt it, the pandemic caught the industry by surprise whereas this is more planned and orchestrated. Means that the oil companies are likely to cut production to sustain and or increase prices would be my guess?

Aircraft, the military and shipping will continue to burn fel, so I don't anticipate and lack of 'car' demand being more than a temp blip... oh and of course the US, Africa and Arab states will burn it for as long as possible to erke out every last $£€

I honestly don't care about petrol cost, within reason. If it went up by a factor of 5, 10, 20, I'd take notice. I do so few miles these days. No commute, no holidays etc.
Or is it just me?

A while ago an oil company chap (Shell) told me that the oil companies could give away petrol and barely notice the difference to their bottom lines. Its the other refinery products where they make their money.
Just saying. That's what he told me.

Harry’s Garage latest video posted yesterday has a fascinating chat with Anthony Bamford of JCB - light at the end of the cylinder for ICE perhaps? Looks like we still have some bright sparks left after all…
