SPORT BUTTON ON A 4200

Hi guys, just got my 4200 Cambiocorsa, love it, lots of fun and great noise, especially with x pipe and emptied rear silencers! In the short time of driving I really find it drives so much better in Sport mode, throttle response and gearbox a lot smoother, however the suspension becomes to harsh. Does anyone know if there is some way for the sport mode to do everything “sporty” but leave the suspension in comfort? I do apologise if this has been asked before, just could workout how to word it in the search box.

FD dwb from what I’ve read gives you the sport diving without suspension and aggressive driving with sport but a bit expensive, I may look for one next year

The only known ways to do that are either the FD dbw module or to swap the suspension to coilovers.

Its annoying that they didnt have 2 seperate buttons. 1 for suspension and 1 for sporty gear changes.

4200 isnt normally that harsh in sport mode for ride quality. Gs on the other hand suffers more with the low profile tyres.

I don’t want to teach you to suck eggs, but have you checked your tyre pressures, tyre profile etc. I have an early Spyder and found it made quite a difference.

The FD DBW is effective when you begin to drive the car in a hard way, so, if you just drive under normal conditions, chances are that stock and FD are the same, but they're not. That said, i do not believe that it could be a solution to what wide100 needs.

A solution, as others said is to use conventional coilovers instead of skyhook, but it's going to be very expensive.

Maybe you could set the PIS in a more aggressive setting, in order to get "something" from the sport mode, but without pressing the button.

BTW, is there a video or a soundclip of x pipe with unsilenced back boxes? Would love to hear the result.

CC cars seem to come up hard against the integration of the gearbox and throttle settings being combined with Skyhook.
There's talk of "cheaper"* coilover options being progressed on ML over the pond...but you're still left with the issue of deactivating the Skyhook function, or putting up with a dash error ( which I believe will not pass MOT in the UK )
Try 18" rims...It seems to be a significant bug bear for GS owners that the ride is so harsh in Sport. It is raised again and again.

* cheaper than KW V3s, or indeed, the FD offering ( essentially rebadged KWs painted a different colour and the price hiked!)
EDIT- Just clocked youre complaining about a 4200, so you're already on 18' rims huh ! Oh well.
Skyhook sucks.....thats my take on it anyway. On a 4200 I didnt find the ride harshness was the primary niggle however...:alan2:

One possible solution might be replacing the skyhook dampers with the (cheaper) passive dampers. I seems from some other threads here that if you unplug the skyhook ecu there isn’t a fault light. But you’d have to change the dampers as they default to rock hard.

That is not a bad shout, also, get a full alignment of the geometry, did it to my 4200 and GT. It transforms the car.

Good point.

Are you sure that all four skyhook dampers are working? I seem to remember someone having an issue with the skyhook on the Centenary trip, their car was p!ssed! I think he got it down to Modena...it was a long time ago...

That happened once to easy.mas

Generally when you unplug the skyhook ECU it's an instant skyhook warning light on the dash - at least it is in my car.

I thought they would default to soft setting without a current / signal being sent from the ecu to stiffen the suspension / adjust the valving.

Learn something new everyday. If they had used a magnetic MR fluid set up i assume it would default to soft setting.

Probably, yes.

Thanks for the replies. I’m very use to sports cars, so understand about geometry and tyre pressures, it really is as simple as press the Sport button and suspension goes stiff, exactly as it should do and I’m sure for the track would be superb, but for current British roads it’s just irritating especially when in comfort mode the suspension works really well for fast everyday driving, the gearbox on the other hand is just awful/so slow in comfort mode. I had an Audi RS5 for a bit and that allowed you to personalise everything, steering, gearbox, throttle, suspension and exhaust, you could have a couple of things on sport rest on comfort, or just the exhaust on sport etc etc, very clever and again for road suspension always was nicer in comfort. So I guess does anyone know if I can and how I unplug the Skyhook, hopefully leaving it in comfort without a warning light on the dash. Thanks again for everyone’s help.

No, if you unplug it, it defaults to rock hard, which is sadly the exact opposite of what you are after.

As I understand it, this is quite complicated, with the ECU using inputs from the accelerometers to pulse the valves in the dampers in both comfort and sport, but with it being harder in sport, so simply unplugging it, or spoofing the signal isn’t really an option without a lot of work. This is why some have gone for coil overs, and I suggested going to the passive damper above.

I cannot imagine driving a 4200 "fast", in non-sport suspension mode. It flows like a boat.
I would suggest, better sell the 4200, the car is like it is, take it or leave it.
Thanks for that helpful answer. Must come to you for all my advice.
