QP/GT front subframes - the truth

I am contemplating buying a used front subframe to re-furbish for future use. Does anyone know if all M139 QP's use the same part number and if so, what is it?

Thanks

There are different versions, I think early auto’s are different, so it depends on the model and year.

I have a 2007 QP Executive GT. Do you know which one I would need and when was the changepoint, if known?

Oh, it's an Automatica

Thanks so much

I think there is an assembly number after which they were the same. Hang on.

88790There are indeed two types, one that fits all GT and most QP’s but there is an early QP type identified by a spacer about an inch long in the upper front wishbone inner mount/knuckle

if you have item 23 spacer on your early QPV front upper wishbone inner mount you have the old solution and a different subframe

Get it underbody corrosion treated every 5 years and you won’t need to worry about the subframes.

@conaero for more details
Indeed. The problem is that mine is already almost 15 years old so I’m anticipating issues. I’ll be getting her on the lift later this week to see where things stand and to find out how many rubber bushes are worn out.

From the MOT manual put up on a testers forum I'm on concerning welding of subframes.
View attachment 91857

Given the serious nature of this, do you know why the MOT test rules were changed to prevent testers from prodding metal work?

And how an assessment of the above can be made if the area is plastered in waxoyl?

I have seen horrific bodges on cars I have bought with recent MOTs - including a hole (in a structural area) that was patched with a cornflake box and duct tape and covered in waxoyl

I haven't tested in the UK for nearly 7 years now but we were always allowed to use tools on the MOT test toolboard that every testing garage should have.
The madness of it all is if a bodge has been covered up is to Pass and Advise it is a Minimum Standards test but you cover your own backside.

Hobnob packets are much more structural. They can take multiple dunkings and still stand up.

@conaero , Hats off to you, doing these on a daily basis. I know you have manpower and equipment but I've just spent the best part of a day just taking off the undertrays and arch liners, cutting off seized fixings and poking and wire brushing scabby bits. lol Not ideal on axles stands, but took much longer than I thought.

Mines late 2013 and doesn't look like its ever been done. The factory powder coating was peeling/flaky in places and just surface rust luckily.

A couple of questions if that's ok -

1. The triangular box section on the upper wishbone mounts- How do you get treatment in there? Just through the small gap between welds on the lower edge? I cant see access to it any where else.

2. Any other particular non obvious places to ensure gets done?

3. I wasn't panning on removing the tin ware through the centre. Do you see much corrosion behind that?

Just had a read through this extremely useful and important thread (especially for newbies like me!). Had a quick peak under my GT and overall the subframe looks good but in places there is a little bit of rust that’s starting to form! I’m based near Farnham Common (west of London), any recommendations on who I can go to to get the subframe treated? (ideally locally but can go further afield if needs be)
Thanks!
