The id 3 has had some iffy reports in the car mags - iD4 or Skoda Enyaq(?) are apparently better.

I've been crunching some figures, and currently the octopus Go tariff off peak at 7.5p per kWh would actually cost us more per year than just plugging in at the April cap at 28p.
Why? Because with their Gas on top, being greater than the April cap rates would cost us significantly more.
I guess we could split suppliers.
I estimate that doing 10K a year at the cap of 28p would be approx £600 a year, the same in the diesel Golf more than double, and rising.

I use different energy suppliers - octopus for the electricity, flogas for the lpg. Far cheaper than using one supplier for both services.

BTW, if you an get away with only filling your EV to 80% capacity (but filling it more often), it’s far cheaper than filling it to 100%. To get the extra 20% of charge into the batteries takes longer and more power than just the added 20%. Hence we tend only to charge our ETron to 80% most of the time, as those 160 miles are more than ample for our typical needs.

We have Octopus Go - moving soon from 4/14p to 7.5/30ish. We charge a 55kWh car to 80% using an Ohme intelligent lead which knows about the tariff so keeps to the cheap rate. Rarely need a full battery as we can get to Exeter or Sutton for child minding etc in one charge - even then we might charge to 95% as a contingency but after 80% time to charge increases steeply. As we own the battery we are gentle with it. On a pcp or company car you might not have that need. As before we are moving to a Zappi + other kit to ensure that no excess solar goes to the grid - at these prices (30p per kWh and rising??) it soon stacks up.

Well the Mrs is now no longer getting a VW id3 as the lease company can't even place an order with VW, as VW has stopped accepting any new orders presently for the id3.
Bit of a shame, so the order has been changed to an Audi A3 hybrid instead. Looks quite good actually in S Line trim and apparently a claimed 40 mile range, which should cover the local stuff.
Tried getting a EV charging point but no chance with the grant ending this month.
So will probably end up using the granny charger initially overnight with battery only being relatively small.
Let's see over the next week or so if the lease company can actually get the Audi.....

Going away next week and used an app to find my nearest charging points, whist in the app I noticed the comments section for members to post their experiences with each EV charging point, if it is working, charge rate etc.

What tickled me is the perceived hierarchic between different types of car owners and the availability of networks and the antics of some EV owners. Here are some examples.

  • Hybrids should not be able to use fast charging points (or in some cases any point) and posting photos of said 'offenders' stating "they should be for full EVs only". Seems rather selfish as they may want to drive in the city on EV mode too.
  • Hatred/Anger to those who car is fully charged but still connected; people leaving rant letters on the windscreen when it occurs. Sorry, are they suppose to wait with the car and move the moment it reaches capacity?
  • Unplugging other peoples cars because their need is greater; even to the stage of hitting the emergency stop to free the other persons cables.
  • Photo shaming petrol cars that are in the EV bays - OK I know is not on, but do you think the driver is going to go onto an EV app to see if they have been shamed?
  • A perceived entitlement for free charges to provide a faster charging rate than they do, and that those provided to hotel customers etc should be for passing trade too.
  • Tesla owners winging that other makes are connected to the (very few Tesla chargers that permit other EVs) network that is only for them
I hate to think how aggressive it will get as more EVs are bought and travel more frequently!

I get annoyed if someone is hogging the pump while they decide to do a weekly shop rather than just paying & moving so yes , if the car is charged move it, it's just selfish to leave it there.

I did read tesla start charging if it's charged and you don't move it.

Some systems do charge you, and some car-parks have max times you can park there.

The full charge thing is a challenge; for eg, I use the gym and pool, and put mine on charge is there is one free when I arrive. But some times mine will be ready whilst I am still in there splashing around... am I expected to come out in my speedos to move it? ;)

FFS - does the sainthood come for free with an EV?
Would expect the car to ping owner once car fully charged so they can get rolling.

also read real world account of guy in North America who crosses that state in fewest charges / lowest cost. He only ever charges to 80% so maybe this is a universal optimum?

In most 100% displayed in not 100% charged, so in theory if you only go to 80% displayed you have only done 80% of 80 or so %

And that sounds about as interesting as the new Beaujolais run rules (to do it in the shortest distance possible) !

If you don't come out it should be law to drop the cable in the pool. :D

This is going to be the problem of the future , entitled @rseholes who view the charging space as a private car park.
