Ran through some insurance quotes out of interest, my BMW M140i isn't due for renewal for 2 months, but don't want a big surprise.
Looks like a possible 50% increase from £400 to £600. We'll see.
For a laugh ran through my mates Range Rover SVR, and another mates new Diesel Sport. £2.5k and £2k....but an Alfa Stelvio Quadrifoglio £1k
Then ran through an Alpine A110 and a GR Yaris, possible BMW replacements, and they are less than my BMW!
All above on 18k a year business usage.
My Pinin is still less than £200

I received the renewal notice yesterday for my wife’s diesel Mini that also includes myself and my 22 yo son as named drivers, again have been with them for years and no claims for any of us on this or any other policy, no endorsements or anything and the premium had gone up 47% !!!

Went on GoCompare and found a suitable alternative (Admiral surprisingly) that matched my original (i.e.last years) premium, needless to say I will be going with them.
Just to follow up on this, the actual increase was from £425 to £630. Admiral we’re quoting £430, I went back to my original company telling them I was leaving and after quite a while on the phone they eventually matched Admiral at £430 …. so they really are just trying their luck!

Bearing in mind the ones going with the inflated renewal price with these insurance companies it will be the elderly in a lot of cases, who are not internet savvy. It should be made a crime really.
If they made the insurance companies stick with their renewal quote and they lost customers in droves that might stop their antics.

Yes, I’ve seen that happen to elderly relatives. However, my wife is with Saga and they’ve just offered her a 3 year fixed deal which she decided to take for the price of a modest increase this year.

Insurers usually see quite a churn of business because of swings in premiums. One year they’ll buy in business by offering cheap rates. They then find out a lot of that is low quality and they have to pay claims, so they then have to up their premium rates. A lot of the loss making business then departs to other insurers who are offering the cheap rates in that round of renewals.

Admiral look like they’re trying to buy in business this year … be interesting to see how long that holds up.

All my insurance, house and two cars are with Saga. So far, luckily I haven’t needed to make a claim but should that happen I’d like to think Saga would be quite straightforward.
Wasn’t Admiral the ones who started asking if you’ve been on a speed awareness course?

We did have a claim with Saga several years ago; someone hit our SUV when it was parked in the road. They looked after us with a courtesy car. The car was a “write off” but I was able to negotiate a market value settlement with them and bought the car back for repair … Saga were straight forward and easy to deal with, so I’d recommend them in the event of actually having a claim, which is what it’s all about!

Confirmed my thoughts William.

Hi Guys,

Can anyone recommend one that does multi car policies pls.
Admiral over 50% increase this year so trying to get something I can go back to them with to haggle - have tried DirectLine and Churchill but they wont quote on one of the cars.
Tried Saga but it comes out over the renewal price!
On Go Compare comes up with companies not used and not sure of and would prefer a recommendation, in case we would need to claim.
Just 3 cars and 2 drivers - no business miles as I use a van if needed.

Thanks in advance

I had the same with my BMW i3 insurance the renewal was more or less 70% more, just cancelled it shopped around and got more or less same as last year, its just milking customers who don't look at the renewal notices. Its dishonest and immoral and a sign of the world we live in.

The new cars have different tech, so they are not subject to the same keyless-go security issue. The current Rangie is one of the most least stolen cars in the U.K.
Turning off keyless-go on the older cars takes seconds. It’s just a case of getting the news out there to the owners of the older cars.
But if insurance companies can stripe some people in the meantime, they obviously will.

Admiral have tried it on for the last 2 years with me. Last year it increased by 60%. Went online and clicked on the icon for thinking of leaving. Then it magically went right back down, and was cheaper than the previous year.

This year it went up 40%. I did the same again and told them I wanted to leave. It didn't go down at all. I then did an online chat with someone in India. He asked me if I got a cheaper quote. I lied to him and said yes (I couldn't actually get a cheaper one from the comparison sites). Then after 3 attempts of him reducing until I was satisfied. I ended settling for only a 8% increase.

They usually want your business, so just haggle or try and find a cheaper one on the comparison sites.

Admiral multi car here with two cars, renewal was £5 or so more than last year, called and got it down a little, not significant but decrease is a decrease! This is the third year with them I think, normally it’s one year on, one year off but seems to have been ok for a change. One comparison site apparently had no one willing to insure (GT and a ‘00 mini) but think that was a glitch more than anything, enough for me not to bother trying again with them…
Coincidently two claims over the years have both been with admiral (accident write off & theft recovered) and had no problems with them or the process.

Had a small increase last year which was ok - if I can get it down to 10% or less that would be ok been with them a few years and not had this rate of increase before , as some companies wont even quote on the Giulia - I will try the online option as mentioned above with Admiral.
Did try separate quotes for the 3 cars but I am being stung for the Giulia each time.
Hastings did a multi car quote for £100 less than my renewal best I have so far.
One last option I will try is Aplan who insure the GTS but have not come close for other cars.
Fingers crossed what has worked for you will work for me.

Thanks

Surprising. Would have thought Alcoholics Anonymous had higher rates.
Only if they declare it

Years ago I worked with a guy who got a 12 month ban for DD

A few years later another 3 year ban which they knocked some time off if he went on a course

Came back to work in a mondeo which he'd apparently insured for £300

5 minutes checking would've told the insurance he had two DD convictions but it's free money for them, there's no circumstances they're paying out on a claim.

Not really. He just fails to explain the difference between the current/new ones, and the previous model. The new ones are not stolen, so insurance isn't a problem. It's (approximately) the ones from 2017-2021 that were being stolen (mainly from places such as London). But these are being upgraded for free from dealers, so it's not really such a big issue any more.
There's videos on YouTube interviewing the head of security from JLR that explain it better than I.

On related news, I have a new Range Rover Sport be delivered on Thursday for an extended test/loan. I've always had full-sized Rangies in the past (such as the one I have now), so it'll be interesting (for me at least) to see what I make of the Sport.

I’m with Bell insurance have 5 cars overall this year, the whole package went up by £300. Which is still much cheaper when I checked with some of the others.

That’s what I mean, a new shape car when it relates to the old ones - misleading if you ask me.
