Flash to Pass and Cruise not working on 2013 Gran Turismo Sport

I am slowly bringing back Grace Jones to perfection. No, not that one! I wish.... :p

Before you ask why BX13JJU is called Grace Jones - isn't it obvious - stunningly beautiful Nero Carbonio, which can simultaneously bring joy and drain your wallet with aplomb! Oh, and she can sing!

GJ was serviced by AV Engineering, who also sorted out a Skyhook fault, dodgy passenger airbag switch, a cracked header tank and some seized bleeding nipples. On top, this weekend, she got a new set of Brembo discs all round, Ferodo DS3000 pads and Hel brake lines. I also got her a new set of Pirellis in Stradale sizes and appropriate alignment, and now she drives beautifully. The final piece of the puzzle is that the Cruise Control isn't working. The Flash to Pass (FtP) isn't working either when the headlights are off. Any ideas where I should start looking? When the low beams are on, the high beam works perfectly, and I can also flash them by pulling the stalk towards me, and the blue lights symbol flashes on the dashboard. It's just that in daylight, pulling on the stalk does nothing. No flash, no blue symbol on the dashboard. No cruise control either. The indicators work fine at all times....

Any help is very much appreciated.

Its difficult to diagnose that one without seeing it but the points of contact and thus failure with what you describe are the stalk itself or possibly the clock spring.

Alas this is all one unit at circa £800 PN: 281701 or a known good used one maybe?

This issue is, that you folk out the £800 and it doesn't fix it but it would appear pretty likely its this

That was my line of thinking - the stalk - but then why does it work once the low beam is on? I have first refusal on a good known stalk for a song - relatively speaking... Also -the clock spring - all other functions - indicators, wipers, horn, steering wheel buttons are working, I think it is highly unlikely that just the FtP would be non-working....

Further thinking on the subject - I am thinking it's not the stalk per-se - it's working after all when the headlights are switched on. Something is preventing the relay from being energised when the lights are off... Looking at the fuse chart - it appears the GTS is the first car I have ever worked on, which doesn't have a dedicated cruise control fuse! May have to resort to pulling each fuse in all three compartments to eliminate this possibility...

P.S. Years ago my M3 suddenly developed a fault where pressing on the brakes illuminated the rear fog light alongside the stop lights. After a lot of probing with a multimeter the fault was found in the Light Control Module. A new one from BMW saved the day...

Further update - checked all fuses, swapped relays for High Beam and Additional Headlights - all working and no change. The Blue symbol for High Beams appears every time I pull the stalk - I think this is further evidence pointing towards a working stalk and that the problem is elswhere - beginning to think - the Body Computer NBC may be faulty.... I wonder if it would store an error like this?

Another update - new stalk cured the cruise control problem. I am tempted to attempt to repair the old one. It appears that the GT stalk is an evolution of the Alfa166/4200 stalk, so I am guessing I should be able to pull it apart and see why the CC wasn't turning on.

Sadly, my flash to pass still isn't working. Emblem have identified a faulty relay, which sits on the circuit which operates the FTP lights when the dipped beam is off. The relay in question is to be found on the Body Control Module of all places. Has anyone ever seen the internals of a BCM and does anyone know what the relay looks like? A new BCM is about £400 from Eurospares, but I am thinking that a simple relay replacement may solve the issue... Any help would be most appreciated and of course I would update any findings I may come across...

The BCM should have 5 to 7 relays that are user replaceable. These are easily accessible on the BCM. The user manual should state the position/function of each relay. If you replace the whole BCM it will need programming/cloned to your original.

The fuse/relay section of the BCM can be separated and replaced. If the fault is within this section and it’s replaced then no programming/cloning required as the BCM brain remains original.
