Is the gearbox letting you select neutral before you try and start the car ? Or is it staying in first gear ?

If it isnt switching to neutral it wont let you start the car.

You should be able to cycle the gears between 1st , nuetral and reverse with just the ignition on but not running.

If you can get nuetral then drop the drivers window down a couple of cms and then turn off the battery isolator in the boot for 15 mins or so and see if you can start the car once you put the battery back on.

Which lights are showing on the dash ? The yellow EML light wont actually go out until a second or so after the engine is running as it still has some self checks to do once the car starts.

Assuming you can get nuetral and it still wont start then your going to need a code reader after that.

Thanks spkennyuk,
I can select reverse, neutral, 1 - haven't tried the others. F1 pump is coming on as usual. Have a basic OBD, just can't see where it is. It's a RHD 2007 GS so I'm looking under the driver steering cowl. Thanks Richard

The obd port is under the dash on the drivers side. If you follow a line straight down from where you put the key in the igntion barrel down under the dash you will find a strip of felt / carpet at the very bottom of the hard plastic of the dash and steering column with a small access hole in it. The obd port is behind that mounted on a metal bracket.

Its easier until you know where it is to be out of the car with a torch so you can look up from the footwell to see it better. You get used to doing it by touch once you know exactly where it is.

Quick update. Have located the OBD and use the clear function. Still no crank and now cannot select 1 or R and F1 pump seems absent. I did disconnect the battery for 30 minutes from the negative pole but have reconnected it and all electrics seem fine apart from no F1 pump noise and no crank. Thanks

Check the relay for the F1 pump. Its located above the battery in the side panel in the boot. You can test it by applying 12 volts from a drill battery or any 12 supply across the terminals. You will hear it clicking quickly if it is working.

If your lucky its the relay thats at fault. Either use the alfa part or if you want an original part then IIRC the Ferrari part is slightly cheaper to buy than the Mas part. I think there is also a BMW altetnative

OK I think I may have found the answer. I can see several nibbled wires under the plenum chamber. I think a mouse has been in there. How hard is the plenum to remove? Thanks
Oh no not good.
plenum is easy enough - 16 nuts, unplug injectors, disconnect fuel pipes. plus you’ll need to replace the gaskets so have them ready - 219459

Does anyone have an under plenum image? I can see a nibbled wire and a vacant spade connector? Thanks Richard

Can anyone recommend an auto electrical guy who's familiar with these cars? I'm gonna need 4 of these black wires that join at the junction box and connect to the block. I also need one of the other end - see diagram. Thanks Richard

Should the broken wires go to the crank sensor?
It’s located in the vacant hole in the below pic

Thanks, really useful. My son is a Master Tech at JLR and has offered to help. Does anyone have access to a wiring diagram? Thanks in advance. Richard

I don’t think knock and crank sensor explain why it won’t turn over. I’d suggest keep digging for more broken wires.

Check the wire between the start button and the ECU in the boot. Easily broken when swapping out the battery. Same happened to mine.
