Can't get into boot

A neighbour of mine has a Granturismo and rang me for advice, as he can't get into the boot. It started with the boot just coming open on its own, now he can't open it at all, has found the emergency release cord under the seat, but not even that will work. My feeling is the latch has broken, anybody come across this before, and any suggestions as to how he might gain access?

Is someone pushing down on boot as the release is pulled?
