Dunno if they are Draper, but one of my ratchets broke, took it in and they swapped it without hesitation.

OK, time to revive this thread.

What do people recommend as a good quality but not too expensive socket set? Ideally a pretty complete set of sockets and arms, in a sturdy case. (Christmas is coming.)

Do I need one metric set and one imperial?
Are there particular features / materials I should be thinking about?

How about something like this? (Although I really don't need any more screwdriver bits!)

77701

Or this:

77702

Don't think I can justify this:
77703

@MarkMas it is safer to stick with the more reputable brands - although some of them are marked up junk

I have a mix of everything from entry level silverline to teng/facom right up to some snap on ratchets I purchased used/nearly new for a bargain. But nothing really matches lol

If you are wanting a decent set that matches, covers all sizes and for occasional use maybe consider this:

The first set looks similar to one I bought from Lidl about 5 years ago , it's been great , I've had a few SnapOff socket sets over the years but the lidl one has been really good, I've even still got all the bits in the right slots

They did have them in about a month back so you might be lucky

Worth checking Costco. They have a couple of Draper sets at present I see.

I purchased a similar set from them over 10 years ago now (Not draper, forget the name). Used to rebuild a 205 GTI and lots more jobs since. Zero issues of failure's.

The Wera kit is excellent, but super pricey.

A good middle of the road is Bahco, had one of these for years, solid as a rock and pretty much all the sockets you’ll ever need.

I bought a Halfords 150 piece set about 10 years ago and it’s been great. I don’t think you can beat it for the money. I’ve added bits as I’ve gone along. Down from £170 to £120 at the moment.

Same here. Ive had mine since the mid 90's broken 3 sockets in that time and halfords have swapped them out no problem at all.

The ratchets have a little play in them these days but still in working order. Pretty sure halfords would swap the ratchets out as and when the mechanism fails as long as its not rusted inside.

I honestly cant fault them for value for money. Even the case is still intact aside from the plastic clips.

I'm the wrong person to ask as most of my kit is Snap On but I have been using it for 40 years and taken it around the World.
Their guarantee and customer service used to be the best for sure with some dealers exceptional.
For you guys taking jobs on at home and many of you certainly amaze me what you do their are certainly some good choices listed.
Buy the best your happy to pay for or get past the wife.
The superior cheaper stuff seems to be from Taiwan rather than China.
Some of you though will spend more on watches and sunglasses than good tools ;)

Ok I did take in my Halfords Pro socket set from the mid 90’s and they swapped out all the broken bits. Gobsmacked!

I use them everyday and they go missing and end up on ‘Snap On’ Ashley’s cart.

Ashley has all Snap On and says the Halfords is descent and all tools break. He has loads of busted Snap On.

So it’s about easy and warranty and I don’t think you can go wrong with Halfords.

So, I will be taking my old tools home and buying all Halfords Pro again as I can jump in the car, drive 10mins and get it replaced on the spot.

They also have started doing these modular foam trays which are a great idea for rollcabs.

I also have some Teng and other Japanese tools and are excellent too.

Buy cheap, buy twice.

@conaero I would dispute the loads of busted Snap On as I still have stuff bought in 78 looking mint.
Do you not have a Dealer visit you guys I would be getting it changed for new.
In my second roll cab that I kept at home I have some Halfords ratchet spanners bought 20 years ago still working good.
I can't recommend the Italian brand Beta high enough and again I have a few bits and pieces of theirs and fit nicely with Maserati.

I have a mix of modern and old cars/bikes so need metric and imperial sockets. This is what I have https://www.cromwell.co.uk/shop/han...-socket-set-70p-c-1-2inch-sq-dr/p/KEN5827995K

Have a set of 1/4” drive smaller bits with BA etc. and smaller sets of both metric and imperial 1/2” drive. Also deeper sockets and impacts etc that you collect over the years.

Kennedy stuff from Cromwell is all excellent if you can stretch to it.

Just my tuppence.

+1

My imperial sockets are a mixed bag mainly inherited from my Grandad (who was a race mechanic) or stolen from my Dad (mechanical engineer) so all decent branded stuff.

My metric sockets are all Teng or Halfords. Teng was the best I could afford at the time but now everything new is Halfords Pro / Advanced as it is well built, VFM and the they have never quibbled about exchanging broken items (I have had to take back two ratchet spanners and a 1/4 ratchet in 20 + years)
