Japanese Import 166

is everything imported from Japan auto gearbox?
Most of the high-end RHD Alfas are - hence the GTAs/166s. The manual GTAs tend to be LHD over there.
There are some nice-looking 2.5 V6 156s in RHD about at the moment over there, as well as a few 145 Cloverleafs. A bit expensive at current exchange rates before shipping but if you want the best...

166 Headlights were certainly style over function, especially on dip - I assume the facelift lights should be better but I have never driven one at night to be sure

based on what I have seen over the past two years, most cars are auto. He did source a manual 130i BMW for a friend of mine for example. I think most of the Alfas David has imported are auto or selspeed (robotised manual?) but occasionally a nice Busso manual comes over. They also tend to have high specs (I have had 5 V8 7-series and they have all been loaded with options).

Just out of interest. How does import insurance compare to uk?

this one is incoming from Japan apparently. I assume the facelift headlights are better. Certainly much bigger.View attachment 79683
That’s the same colour as my old 3.2 166.
True about the rot on uk compared to Japanese Alfa’s. You’d need to underseal the japanese cars once in the uk though or they won’t last long.
Plus, I don’t think there are any manual gearbox Japanese GTA’s, all selespeed. Not for me, better condition or not.

I am not sure that EU built cars are any different in terms of underseal for Japanese market. I will check. If so, starting mint and spending a couple of hundred on waxoiling must be better than the state of most 15 year old UK cars.....

I may be wrong, but I think uk ones have some form of (not very good) underseal, the Japanese ones none. In terms of condition the japanese ones are certainly a better start point rust wise!
I need to do a common fix on my 147 where manufacturing drain holes are not sealed properly from new and rust through. A shot of mine pre fix and the underside of a Japanese import.....

Nearly all the manual GTAs are left hand drive, don’t know why but was told it’s a sign of prestige to have a left hand drive car in Japan.

correct; nearly all BMW M, Audi RS, AMG, Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari, Lambo and even Bentleys are LHD. One of the many bewildering eccentricates in Japan (That could be whole thread on its on!!)

Had a manual. Bought site unseen from ebay, and drove to Champagne. **** of a car, just not for me. Sold it to my Dad who ran it until and idiot wrote it off on the drive :(

C
is it a family thing , you’ve got a bit of history with car smashups on the drive :D

I went to look at a 3.0 166 about 10 years ago , from the sellers description on the phone I bought a train ticket and went with cash in my pocket , he picked me up from the station in a van

what a hunk of junk , it drove ok but he’d cleverly photographed it to hide the body damage including a football sized dent in the back door

I looked at it , WTF is that , I specifically asked if it had any body damage , well, I though we could negotiate a bit about that

FFS

he lived in a village about 5 miles out of Leeds , picked me up , dead chatty , took me back , not a word , didn’t even say goodby just screeched out of the car park

it‘s the closest I’ve ever been to owning an Alfa

I’ll be bookmarking that site though , thanks Mike

That's why cars like the QP are so bad now, they where exposed to salt and grit when new with inadequate protection.

I do find it quite sad that such a beautiful car , running perfectly with immaculate bodywork and interior is in effect a write off because it needs more than the car is work spending on it to get it through an MOT

I‘ve got a Citroen berlingo van , it‘s 17 years old , needed 2 small patches on the sills for the MOT yet 100k worth of QP is a write off for the want of £500 spending on rust prevention when new

I can vouch for the manual GTAs being LHD. A lot of those have ended up in the UAE.

Initially I thought the Japanese liked having the steering wheel based on the cars country of origin but then I saw many japanese spec Jaguars, Bentleys and RRs in LHD.
