This is from a good friend of mine in Somerset who's brother is on the front line in London.

My brother worked in an intensive care ward in London last night. He sent me this today :

" Was good today. Amazing ICU teams. Amazing nurses I worked with. Good morale albeit recognising the unrelenting case load coming in. Striking loneliness of being so unwell and risk of death with no family with you. Zoom calls arranged by nursing team so relatives can see their loved ones-,but try having a functional zoom call with an intubated, unconscious , close to death relative- heart breaking. Another awful case of daughter (in her 30s)and father both in with COVID after Christmas- both likely to die. The wife/mother having to have end of life conversations at a distance over the phone. Another 28 year old, intubated and sick- previous regular scuba diver! This variant has really increased case load, and last night drunken mob outside St Thomas’ (opposite Parliament) chanting ‘Covid is a hoax!’ - you couldn’t make it up. I think government need to be more alarmist about this variant."

Stay safe.

An interesting quote and given its source was always going to be at one end of the risk spectrum. However, we all understand the risk for old people or those with material (whatever that means) underlying healthcare conditions but how does it target young (say those under 50) people? This is the key for me as so many young people are relatively unaffected/have mild symptoms/are asymptomatic but some are at the other end of the scale. If we can vaccinate the vulnerable groups and get a grip on the reasons for a sub set of the low risk groups being badly affected then we are on the road to getting back to normal.

If true that’s very sad, but I think a line has to be drawn with regard to being alarmist, and I’m sure this has already been weighed up by the supposed powers that be. It can also contribute to panic, which is counter productive. If the average UK citizen doesn't already realize the seriousness of the situation as it stands, it is not going to help much. What is necessary is a more proactive and effective enforcement of the already existing regulations. Irrespective of the variation you mention, the reason that people catch it is because they have been in close contact with someone who has got it. I know that it is impossible to stop interaction, but a lot of people are just not being sensible, they do not really care, which is eventually unfortunate for others. Most of us do, but somewhere down the line, someone likely did not, and it’s passed on and on. Clamp down on those that don’t give a to$$ about others.

Evening constitutional around Llandudno this evening. With an older than average local population we 'get' the message.
19:15 on a Saturday night and the streets are deserted. So sad to see. Nothing open, nobody out. No people, no cars, no kids on corners.

Sounds like the lyrics to a covid blues song.

I think a lot of the UK are seeing the same thing. After 8pm the places you see any movement is garages, corner shops and take away places.

So took Charlie for her vaccine today at her alloted time at a very large GPS office attached to the NHS dep she works for as a consultant.

Appointment was 12:45 and on arrival she joined a queue of c100 80+ years old individuals in the line weaving through the carpark. Temp was 0 to -1 in the snow. Too many turning up hours before their booked slots... looked a line of Soviet era families queuing for bread.

It took over an hour and a half to reach the end (the actual procedure was fast, effective and well organised)... but the queue outside horrific.

Whilst there she treated two old ladies who simply collapsed in the street waiting. We pulled out camping chairs from the boot for them, I went to Costa for dozen hot chocolates, gave two brollies away and I ended up taking one lady to the BRI.

Think it will be some time after autumn 2021 before I join the same queue... if at all.

Yeah, we've seen similar stories here, OTOH my mother's experience was nothing like that. My neighbour, who I took for her first jab, was queuing for maybe 15 minutes, and then observation, then out.

What a sad sad citation for the patients, their loved ones and of course the medical team looking after them. As for the protesters outside they need rounding up and some sort of detention centre setting up. Just a bunch of small minded bigots who have no use in today’s society.

Again the stupidity of people not thinking or not caring about the consequences of turning up early. Perhaps they thought they were going to sit in a nice waiting room with tea and biscuits.

Spot on. How can those responsible get away with organising mass events such as that seen in France (2,500 people partying in a warehouse) and raves/lockdown parties organised throughout the UK? As far as I'm concerned they are knowingly endangering public health and should face a long prison sentence, and anyone caught at such an event should be quarantined at the venue for a minimum of 10 days then not released until they have personally paid for and passed a Covid test.

I think people will flout the law when they weigh up the costs... look at the cringeworthy series of rule breakers.. that twonk that worked for Boris and went driving off to a castle... and got off scot free. The "superstar" singer Rita Ora... she handed over 10k as a "oops i did not understand the rules please don't hate me.., here let me make amends" .. probably the equivalent of me handing over 50 quid... and now the idiot from some godawful reality TV program that has been arrested trying to get on a plane with her boyfriend to get out of Barbados. 18k max fine and up to 12mths in chokey.. chances are, as they are very wealthy, the wastes of DNA will get off with a slapped wrist.. Time to make some serious examples and up the punishment...... but alas, it will never happen...

You missed the Scot MPwho travelled home knowing she was covid +VE.
Di had her inj yesterday. Delivered to hospital 5 mins early, no que, very well organised, said it would take an hour including 15 minutes observation time at end. Was out in 45.
The only annoying thing for me was the parking. I paid to park ( not the annoying bit £3) , the car parks were empty but when I walked over to main building to pay , there were cars abandoned everywhere, parked on double red lines, on the pavement etc. Some had 6” snow on roof so there overnight. Rant over.

Reading about India on how they are planning to vaccinate their priority cases, 300 million! That's out of 1.38 billion I knew the population was huge, but I didn't realise 20 times greater than the UK or over 3 times greater than the US. China is even bigger at 1.44 billion.

Ive been quite surprised by population numbers throughout this. Wales’s population is roughly the same size as that of the West Midlands both about 3 million.

Yes i know, and Scotland about the same as Yorkshire at approx 5.5 million, insignificant in the grand scheme of things!

China hasn't got covid though, they said so, so it must be true

The infant and junior schools are starting to announce closure tomorrow in our tier 3 area. The teaching unions are forcing closure because unsafe to teach face to face.
Is it unsafe for me to go to work tomorrow too?!!

Depends on if you’re likely to be stopping the office assistant from choking on a Pritt Stick, removing a crayon from the MD’s left nostril or stopping Tracey in accounts from throwing chairs at Malcolm because he stole her ruler.
