Learnt a lot from that article. Thanks for sharing. This is shocking, even to the mechanically illiterate amongst us...

Ah Robert F, how’s my old Grigio GranSport enjoying the Australian climate.

Any issues or upgrades?

Somebody in the performance department was definitely sleeping when the structural engineers proposed this (and worse, got it passed!!) The mind boggles...

It is not actually as bad as it appears.
If you look closely the section that is squashed is a greater diameter pipe. I bought a spare pair of downpipes and cut out the cats, on examination the internal cross sectional area at the squashed section wasn't that much different to the pipe cross sectional area further down.

And, as someone 'mechanically illiterate' is it really better to replace a large oval tube with a pair of smaller round tubes? Maybe something to do with turbulence, but doesn't really make sense to me...

The bigger diameter pipe with flattened bit must be oval shaped then - if I do the calculations from the pic the cross sectional area of the larger pipe would be approx twice that of the smaller bit, but it seems that the squashed bit is squashed to less than half of the larger pipe. Then it makes sense (you would hope!)

Yes the cross sectional area of two much smaller pipes is not that great either.
After spending large amounts of money on the larini downpipes, whether it makes any difference or not, you will certainly think it makes a difference! The difference if actually there will be due to the decatting/sports Cats rather than the squashed bit.

Hi Matt,
going well . Only driven 3500k in last 12 months with Covid-19 lockdown. Still love the car. Every time I drive it it provides a sense of occasion. No real problems, just serviced by ART .
I look at the Ferrari Roma and think the same concept! For a lot less money.
regards
Robert F
