Project 4200

Morning all,

Bought myself a project 4200 for not a lot - eBay non reserve
RX53UUA or previous M444SRA.

Does anyone know the car?
I seem to sort of recognise the previous private plate.

anyway bought as a non runner as wouldn’t start with gearbox light on.
After a bit of diagnostics (no scanner just using logic!) and a used clutch release bearing with f1 sensor I got the fault cleared and started the car.

Then went onto fit the used f1 / clutch sensor through a hole in the bellhousing so wasn’t actually that bad apart from dropping the exhaust out the way.

Plan to improve it as interior is a sticky mess, heater matrix (again) and oil leaks (front cover maybe or just overfilled will oil)
Service it and check brakes as inside discs are rusty so probably pads seized in calipers

Then join some mates on track with their lotus exige (yes I know this is pretty far removed from a track weapon but will fun)

Few pics

Were those little tinkers included in the ebay purchase? Had they stowed away in the boot? :D

So sad to see how neglected these cars have become, I saw this advertised too.

Great to see you putting it back together.

Thanks mate,
Suppose cheapest part of maserati ownership is the buying it part.

This has amazing history (upto this year) from specialists so no money spared there, body is good but interior let it down and everything else generally tired or overlooked.
Just waiting to see if gearbox filter has ever been out

Best of luck. I guess this is how fifty years out we get to a few examples of these sort of cars in great condition and with potentially great value - 90% have been neglected and died.

Please post updates.

Great project. Looking forward to updates. Didn't see this on ebay.
Always wanted another project needing mechanical work not body work so I can do it all myself.
Not much interest in a 112k mile 2003 coupe where the owners been told it needs a new clutch as it won’t start

Makes me feel better, at least one bolt came out of each of my exhausts. ;) Helps me to face the manifold nuts which are all nicely rusted onto the studs.

Haha - not worth much is it? Looking at the invoices the car should be mint….
No, not a lot, harks back to the 'why I do my own maintenance' thread a while ago, makes me laugh, all these people who insist on a 'main dealer/ specialist' service history, much rather buy a car from an enthusiast who does as much of it himself (much like you and I) then you know it's been done properly.

Yes 100%.
In my opinion these nearly 20yr old cars need enthusiast owners not collecting stamps / bits of paper, but then again not all owners are willing or capable or have the time.
It’s all part of the ownership experience for me as well.
