Alfa Romeo will re-launch itself with seven new models that'll push the brand up-market, according to a new report.
The company, which has struggled to capture the public's imagination in recent years, is said to be pinning its future on a range of executive saloons, sports cars and crossovers, all of which will mean an Alfa showroom in just a few short years' time will look nothing like that of today.
According to the report, published in Auto Bild magazine, Alfa Romeo will also drop its current small cars, the Mito and Giulietta, leaving only the forthcoming larger models in its range.
That move would take Alfa Romeo away from the mainstream, and pitch it into direct competition with premium brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar.
The report adds that the first new model we'll see will be the Spider roadster in 2016. This will be followed in 2017 and 2018 with the Giulia and Alfetta saloons, both of which will go head-to-head with the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series respectively.
Sergio Marchionne, CEO of the Fiat Group, to which Alfa Romeo belongs, is hoping that the new models will spearhead a global revival for the brand, including in the tricky US market.
"We've already gone public in Detroit that we're working ******* the next phase of Alfa, and it's a severe rethink of everything we've done," he told Auto Express. "By the end of 2015 you will see cars that are representative of Alfas going forward."
