Afternoon,

Driving down the A1, but similar signs are on all motorways heading towards London, M2 M3 etc.

London is a big place, what part are they using for distance measurements ?

I turned of the A1 but if i continued for 100 miles where would i arrive at ?

thank you

Charing Cross is traditional the centre no idea where the A1 finishes.
And house / building numbers are also lowest the closer they are to Nelson's Column.

iirc the A1 finishes at St Paul's.

edit: just checked. It ends where New Change meets Cannon Street, just east of St Paul's.

That would rather depend on where you turned off the A1 and in which direction you turned ;)

But yes, the Eleanor Cross at Charing Cross certainly used to be the distance point.

Odd really as Number 1 London (Apsley House) may have made more sense (which is not very near St Pauls at all) near Hyde Park Corner.

Of course, the cross was there before the address so.....

That is interesting - is / was that the geographical centre ?

I think it was taken as a suitable starting point when it started to become important. I can't see how it can be the geographical centre (at least historically) as Roman London was a chunk to the east so you'd be more looking at the City / Square mile

I guess as mobility increased there had to be some sort of way of saying 'Here's London' and given that (as I understand it) most towns and villages measure distance to the market square, the Cross seems as good a place as any.

London clubs tend to measure the 100 miles boundary (for a cheaper annual subscription price) as a straight line from their building, or Marble Arch or Hyde Park Corner.
I live about 94 miles from Marble Arch.
Grrr.
