Musing out loud here (metaphorically...)

Am doing Le Mans in the DB9. Will be all stickered up, leaving Weds night, back Monday evening, a lot of miles as 100miles/day round trip to circuit. Can't wait, main event of the year for me!

However, have just signed up to do SpaItalia the weekend before Le Mans, returning on the Sunday night (so 2 1/2 days in UK until I leave for Le Mans). Meeting the group on Thursday in Trier in Germany, a bit of a hike from London! Thinking London-Calais-Brugge on Weds night then Brugge-Trier on the Thursday, then travel with the group to Spa. Again, big miles, 90%+ motorway stuff too.

Conundrum is; do I take the Aston to this as well or something else? I wouldn't inflict the Marcos on her for that kind of distance so was thinking 964. But it's an old, noisy, bouncy car, whereas the Aston is new(ish) and would just eat up the miles so perfectly. Kicking myself I sold the Maser (although I wouldn't have the Aston if I hadn't!!)

Taking the Aston upsides: It's stupidly fast, comfy, and so easy to do the miles with cruise etc. The 964 is a fine car, but it's no DB9.
Downsides: If anything were to go wrong, get a knock in it, bend a wheel, something silly, I'm without it for Le Mans, which is the main thing.

Do I risk 2 trips in it? Would you use your Maser for a 1000 mile+ Euro trip the week before Le Mans, or would you take your MX-5/Clio182/old 911/lesser-but-still-fast car?

Genuinely stumped. Want to take the DB9 to both (it is *that* good) but not sure I can risk it with Le Mans coming up. Le Mans is the main event, no question.

Opinions? Please!

DB 9 for both - definately

I am sure many will agree thats its why you would buy such a car ....

With a comprehensive European breakdown cover for piece of mind it will be perfect.

taking the QP to paris in July, and apart from the parking am really looking forward to it.

Enjoy!

It was mentioned on another forum that taking 2 cars would make it feel like 2 trips - a good point. But I agree that a Euro double header was what the DB9 was designed to do!

I think I will plan for DB9 for both and get the mileage bumped up to 6k. If the unthinkable happens, I will use the Marcos as a back up car for LM rather than the 911, that'll keep pace with the rest of the group no problems!

Aston Martin themselves provide the breakdown cover, which is nice :)

It's got a lot to live up to though, the Maser last year at LM was the best drive of my life. A simply astonishing car :)

Spoke to some guys today, they will do it in a day. So home from Spa Sunday night, guess I'll get them done Monday. Then off to meet you guys Weds night/Thursday morning! Will have the designs all done, will just be aplication at that point. And they're a mile from my house, perfect!

Yes DB9 Lewis ...Why wouldn't you ......

I can't express how much I am looking forward to Le Mans... really don't want to risk the car and spoil my holiday! I think I'm just being silly though, it's reliable and I'm safe and sober. It'll be fine!

You and me are getting old Andy! Restrain? From the guy who popped his M5 clutch at Llandow so got his Mrs over so he could track their Skoda instead??

Spa is unlikely to be a hooligan event to be honest, a lot of old people in very, very expensive Italian exotics. One guy deciding whether to bring his reliable DeTomaso Mangusta or risk his unreliable Lambo Miura... now that's a decision to make!

Not at all Frank - Miura lives under the house in a converted cellar and the Magusta lives in a barn on his land with my Marcos! He also has a 356 which is friends with my 964 and has a Marcos of his own, as all discerning gentelmen do. Plus a 1948 Citroen cabriolet with a dolly seat. He drives to the south of France in it!

I sat in the Miura (orange with blue leather, orange stitching), was going out for a drive but the battery was flat. Gutted, and the offer was withdrawn when he'd sobered up!

.....even more bizarre Lewis.....that he has this nonchalant confidence in his cars....which is brilliant!

A 1948 Traction Avant roadster........?! But surely they were all pre-war?

I think this is actually it - at Festival of Speed, though picture found on t'internet (he lives just down the road from Goodwood).

Lovely looking thing, but slow... Dolly seat is novel, just rolls over to make a little bench on the bootlid!
