2009 Quattroporte Sport GT S noises ?

Hello gents,

It's a 2009 Quattroporte Sport GT S with 5000 miles on it, had it checked at 3500 miles, everything was great. After getting accustomed to it after 2 months of driving, I'm hearing some noises that I didn't notice when I bought it.

1. Back doors curtains make some rattling noise when going over rough terrain, if I roll them down the sound goes away. Any ideas on how to make the rattling go away ?

2. At first start, after a few seconds of nice powerful growl, i hear a slight metallic sound at the back of the car which accompanies the growl which makes me think that the exhaust pipe is vibrating against something.

3. Sometimes in weird roads, eg. hard right turn with a weird inclination change at average speed, i guess the chassis bends or something, and I hear 1 clank noise either back right, or back left depending on the turn. I have yet to find out what's making that noise. Any clues on what it could be?

4. When taking off at average speed, i hear a clank noise, the same when I break. The sound leads me to believe that it happens when the gearbox changes from 1st to 2nd, or when it's downshifting to 1st gear. But I'm just guessing I can't really identify the position of the sound, somewhere on the front side of the car :)? I was under the impression that the gearbox is at the back . If I accelerate very gently then there is no sound, the same for when breaking very gently. The sound is present in both Sport and Non-sport mode.

When going over rough terrain or potholes there are no sounds (except back curtains rattling) also when hard breaking to a stand still, no sounds, the sound can be heard before let's say the car halts to a stand still

The car seems to be pretty well maintained by previous owner, and also has very low mileage.
The only modification to the car, is the upgrade to the wider front mud guards.

Any information would be helpful as I don't want to seem paranoid and bother the nice engineers.

Thank you and looking forward to your help.
Cristian.

Definitely a 'clank', not a gruff rubbing noise? I've found the nearside front rubs the wheel lining when on full right lock. Especially uphill (turning into my garage entrance for example) as it loads the nearside suspension more and pushes the wheel further up into the wheel well.

The clanks could come from front or rear - it can be hard to tell. Clanking noises usually tend to be associated with worn bushings or worn linkages as the rubber has worn away send metal is touching metal e.g. such as in the anti-roll bars. Front bushings can wear from around 15k to 25k miles.

English is my 2nd languages, so I can't tell the difference between a clank and a gruff even the clank was a guess :)

on #3 If I think about it, yes I think the sound is present on uphill turns. the noise is heard exactly once each time it doesn't sound like metal, more like hard rubber hitting something ?!

on #4 today I've noticed that I hear it when I break from 30mph to stand still, the engine revs up when downshifting.. between 2nd and 1st then I hear the noise, when accelerating I can't be very specific but it makes the noise only once also...

Thank you for your help.

I think number two will be the exhaust valves closing after start up in sports mode, assuming it the same set up as a Gtranturismo GTS.

on #2 the sound is persisting, so it's not a one time thing. That's why it makes me think, that it might be something vibrating underneath. I thought that valves closing would be a one time thing. If it turns out it's the valves, then I need to keep them from closing so... sport mode it is :D.

I fixed one of the noises, under max wheel turn taking off would make some popping sounds. by changing the front tires to Continental CONTISPORTCONTACT 5P 245/35R20 Z XL FR the noise was gone. Pirelli seem to by very bad, everybody seems to take them off.. also among the known brands they are the cheapest...

Hi Christian, sorry to hear your problems.
If it is the Sport GTS that you have then the gearbox is at the front being the ZF version and some were noted to develop prop shaft slack if used briskly when young. This would make a clank or clonk on load take up.
Not expensive and not critical.

Could be a loose exhaust heat shield. Mine was making a thin metallic vibrating noise which sounded similar to the noise of the valves closing. Except it was persistent and it got louder as the heat shield got looser. 5 minute fix.

What's the conclusion on this ? Is it something that requires immediate fixing, or could be fixed on the next service in about 3000 miles ? When you say not expensive, can you estimate a range ?

Thanks Adam, I'll look at that during the week-end.

Thanks

There are plenty of better qualified members who will no doubt advise but I don't think it is critical and wouldn't expect it to cost a fortune.
