3.8L V8 on Quattroprote GTS vs 4.7L on Granturismo

Is this 3.8 TT V8 what Maserati will be using on the Granturismo replacement?

Comparison of the 2 exhaust notes on utube...

While the 3.8 is obviously more powerful, it just can’t compete against the symphony produced by the wonderful Ferrari derived NA V8.

Not sure about you guys, but I definitely prefer the sound of the 4.7 and it’s character...

I'II take the extra 100bhp and much more torque. Love my car and it's engine but it's slower than Mrs BBs Golf R with its 7 speed DCT.

People need to realise horsepower is a function of revolutions, so it's it's only valid at that point when it's screaming it's ******** off 100%....

Never liked turbos, love superchargers!

Torque is the key, had an 8.2 litre Cadillac once, 180bhp, but it could rip a tree trunk out of the ground. Once towed my Dad's fuked Austin Princess off his work car park, didn't realise rear brakes has seized on on the Princess, never felt any resistance in the Caddy.

Still hanker after modernising a 1961 Caddy Coupe, decent engine, decent dash, proper suspension, convert to RHD...

The 3.8 does sound descent but also you have to consider the drive.

For me the 4.7 has character where as the 3.8TT will have a very linear drive. Power is not everything but it does help.

Linear on the TT? Won't the turbo's kick in at the higher end and make it less than linear? Or are turbos better than they used to be!?

I've only even had three turbos;

1. Renault something, think turbo was broken - never seemed to kick in.

2. Ford Galaxy, deisel so who knows

3. Maserati BiTurbo, that car was generally fooked and I was out of my depth then!

4. Audi 200 Quattro Turbo, that really did kick in at higher revs, nice car, C100BNF.....

Sorry, 4.....

There seems to be a real anti turbo thing nowadays, natural aspirated, natural aspirated, naturally aspirated, yada, yada, yada.

I've never heard anyone say, "oh that F40, it'd be so much better without the turbos!"

I spend too much time thinking 'bout that probably. But there is something very simple and attractive to having the 1:1 peddle-to-zoom ratio that turbo wooooooooshers never have. Turbos always (to me) have that "hang the **** on, we're in the boost zone" that makes me feel less in control.

Wow, technology really has moved on - a huge 8.2 L and only 180BHP. Ridiculous in today’s standard, but I bet the normal cars then would have produced only 40 BHP back then.

Different strokes guys and gals......

Every engine and every car has its character and each will and won’t appeal to each human. Too many permutations to worry about.....

I love the hair-trigger of my 1.9 GTI and love the twin-cam delivery of my big bore 130 Elan, both normally aspirated but completely different deliveries.

I also love the grunt of the 22b which is a different delivery to the Evora 400 with its supercharger.

It’s also like Hi-fidelity.... you can’t have your favourite song or mix tape as there are factors like time of year, weather and sentiment that change what you want to hear...

For me, cars are the same. Some days I don’t want to drive a certain car and then a couple of months later, I miss it and hanker to drive it.

I remember the wonderment of my first terracotta orange 950cc Popular Plus that I managed to get to go off the clock in on the downward stretch of the M11 towards the 406. Engine vibrating that I thought it would blow. That had everything for me...

Time and place.....

3.8 TT looks far more se.xy under the bonnet but for me it’s buy no doubt the 4.7. I’m certainly not against turbos but the Q is one or the other (I was always advised in life/business when you say but... everything before doesn’t count lol)

I think they have done a good job with the noise from the QP given the silencing effect of the turbos. But it still doesn’t hold a candle to the F136. One day, maybe, we can have both.

However if you ever want an advert for a NA engine, this is it.

Probably one of my most favourite sounding engines ever. Absolutely bonkers....

The way it spins up is astonishing.

Would loved to have seen RB driving that stage and seen how much less he would yaw the wheel. RIP...

When he missed that gear off camber and weight changing into that corner.... I was thinking oops but he held it together well
