Looked at mine and it is the same so perhaps its normal for the age of the cars. Also looked at changing the unit, the manual says to change the whole unit servo included but eurospares do show the brake pump cylinder as a separate unit. If you can just change this then as you say it looks possible with removing the engine.
Can also answer 77gr point my measurements where with engine off and breakpedal pumped a few times.

Mine were with engine running so will definitely be nearer the floor.

There were no black bits in there when Autoshield changed the brake fluid about 200 miles ago.

Using the same procedure as you I get 150mm which I don’t think actually tells us anything???

They look like seal remnants!

Dave

I know. That’s what worried me when I looked this morning.

Do you mean 150mm of travel, that nearly to the floor, or 40mm of travel 150mm from the floor.

Same why you did it. 190mm from middle lhs of pedal to floor and when pressed 150mm. So 40mm of travel.

Think that's probably normal then, if you are not confident with them perhaps its the pads.

I don’t think it’s pads, I’ve driven lots of race cars on cold pads. It feels just like there’s air in there.

Nor will it be the brake hoses so you can forget that.. It's either the original brake master or the ABS pump seals, lets not forget these parts are well over 20 years old!

Could even be the seals failing in the brake calipers!

Why are you convinced it’s not hoses?

I agree with you on the 20 year old thing. When I was messing around with nailed MGBs and Beetles with no sills they were of a similar age.
