4.2 Engine mount replacement

So I've had the GT for 10 months now and generally it's been great. It always had a bit of vibration on idle but after putting a good few miles on it last week it's got a lot worse. I think its the engine mounts. As I live in Northern Ireland there's not really any specialist independent that I'm aware off. How hard is it to change the mounts I assume its not a home garage job but could my local guy, who I've used for years, do it. Can you do it just supporting the engine, is there any specialist tools of setup that you need.
Thanks.

Alas it’s not simple no.

Engine covers and scuttle out.

My method is to undo the top mount bolts, ondo the subframe bolts, on a lift use two transmission jacks, lower the subframe an inch, jack the engine an inch, pry bars and swearing.

^^^^^ This.
Alcohol (for drinking), bandages, splints, divorce lawyer, dog (for kicking), new swear words, plan for how to move the whole mess to someone who can do the job. Did mine last year.....

I did engine mounts myself at home. With some good tools its quite easy. Just a bit of swearing to get the nuts loose within the limited space. So a ratchet with a lot of teeth helps quite a bit. I used a telescope one to get most amount of leverage. There are designated places where you can jack the engine up just high enough. Just make sure to loosen the intake hose.

You need to remove the enigine supports as well to get the new mount in. Its about a day work. I also did my transmission mount, which is super simple.

I bought all new nuts and bolts too, which is about as costly as the mounts themself. But hey, good for another 15 years.

Lowering the subframe is also a good way. I guess if you do these a bit more lowering the subframe is easier. For the GT the workshop manual doesnt require lowering the subframe.

When you replaced your engine mounts, how evident was it that the original ones had failed or were a problem?

Thanks

Many thanks for the link you provided. It was most informative, particularly the last note. I had previously been told that the mounts were supposed to bulge and were okay unless there was evidence of leakage. The symptoms I have been experiencing, vibration through the steering wheel, clunking over bumps had led me to suspect the engine mounts but when inspected they were dry but bulging at least as much as the worn one in the other threads pictures. Maybe they are to blame after all!!

well it wasnt really evident. But more of a preventive maintenance thing. They were quite collapsed compared to new ones though.

Could it be engine misfire that causes excessive vibration?
