4200 Coupe Rear Screen Seal/Surround

Hi folks, Ok - I am new not only to this forum but also to Maserati/ Always loved them ever since way back when - just never got round to owning one. ill post a profile later and get up to speed. I bought a rather nice Red Maserati 4200 Coupe - 2004 vintage but with only 28k on the clock and great condition but....... couple of small issues. This one is the Rear Window Seal - exterior. This is the rubber seal trim that goes around the rear screen - it is suffering from age. I don't know if it is originally bonded to the glass to keep its shape or if it just sits flush with the glass anyway. Problem is mine doesn't.
on the two edges left and right the rubber is rippled away from the glass in the area above the rear screen heater wires.

it appears to me that the this seal/trim comes complete with a rear screen attached for around £1500 plus fitting - is that right?

So looking to bond the rubber to the glass to sit flush and seal does anyone have any suggestions on what to use - needs to be a professional rubber/glass bonding agent - I have a couple in mind but wondered if anyone has beaten me to it. Lessons are there to be learned not repeated?

Many thanks, in advance.

Welcome Robin.

You are right, it is a bonded fitting and are almost impossible to find second hand in good condition.

Hope you find a resource to fix it...and if you do please post a 'how to' on here.

Oh and a photo of your new car would be welcome by all.

I had a feeling that this might be an issue :) most of the publicly available adhesives are not up to the job. They don't bond the hardened rubber of old seals. I have a few contacts in my industry so I may come up with something - if so I shall certainly post a 'how to' and a 'where from' on here.

As I suspect that the main contenders are going to be either two part resins or even UV activated products and sold in bulk I may also look to making up some kits if I can to do this job.

Watch this space - though don't hold your breath as I am out of Uk until early January at work.

Hi Robin. Welcome to the joys of trident ownership. If i recall one of the forum members cars had the rear screen taken out and then bonded back in place last year as part of a full respray.

If you send either a PM to forum member Wack61 im pretty sure it was his car. He should be able to find out from the paint shop which product was used to bond the screen.

It didn't exactly go that easily, they broke it getting it out , Conearo found me a used one but I think if you're taking the glass out you should prepare yourself for a big bill , personally if it's not leaking I'd just live with it.

He got a screen fitter in ,I don't imagine they used anything other than what was in the van, it was hard to get to speak to him on the phone while my car was down there because he was always in the spray booth so getting him to find out what sealant was used is going to be impossible

I have a spare rear screen from a 2001 3200 if its the same?
As for bonding i would have thought Tiger seal would be fine.

I was going to suggest Tiger Seal, It's what holds TVRs together! You would have to apply it under the raised part of the trim, then find something suitable to press it down until it cures. I used a piece of wood, and a long piece jammed between it and the garage roof overnight.

Hi Robin, I have the exact same issue as you so have been watching on here for a while.
Beau had his rear screen rubber replaced by a local windscreen guy in the UK, so I asked out here too.
The repairer said they had 3 profiles of rubber they could try when I'm ready.
He was confident they could do it, even if they had to modify the profile.
So I'd ask your local windscreen guy.

many thanks to all - first line of attack is to get hold of one of the commercial aero or auto glass bonding adhesives - the stuff off the public shelf just isn't up to it.
I spoke to a screen guy near me and he said they could practice with various profiles but........ couldn't guarantee the glass wouldn't break as apparently when aged by the sun (in UK?) and weather (OK!) the glass may not be as strong as it should be.
So baby steps first (cover myself in glue) and then if that doesn't work try a for a window out and re-profile rubber.
Thanks to all.

Ok. Update. I used Liqui Moly Liquifast 1502 (Cartridge-Set) 1Stk from Amazon to completely re-seal the rear screen rubber surround. It's perfect but.... messy. The stuff is so thick it won't squeeze out of the cartridge unless warm, wear gloves, not only does it stick superbly to glass and rubber - it is near enough permanent on skin! Any excess can be trimmed back after an hour.

Sadly no before pics (just a badly lifted and rippled trim) but I will get some after pics posted.
