75-80k to spend on a toy

So, was chatting with a mate of mine earlier and it turns out his nan has left him and his brother and sister a big lump of money.
None of them thought she had a penny.

Turns out instead of putting her money in a pension, she played the stock market and was very good at it.
He has decided he has two options of what to do with his share.
  1. Pay off his mortgage.
  2. Pay off most of his mortgage, Take his wife and kids (two under 10 girls) on an amazing holiday and buy himself ‘an amazing car’ as the mortgage repayments on £100k ‘are nothing’.
He has a decent job, and a nice house already so I told (suggested) he bought a toy.

He now wants suggestions, as all he’s come up with is:
Audi R8
BMW M3

I’ve suggested:

F430 Ferrari
Aston Vantage or Vanquish both V12’s
A Strad (obviously)

Any other suggestions? He doesn’t want a classic, and would prefer not to buy brand new.

Lucky bugger!

Why does this sort of thing never happen to me? And all this schoolboys being seduced by sexy teachers, never happened at my school. Mind you thinking back to the teachers we had I'm quite pleased about that. Apart from Yvette, the French exchange trainee teacher we has, she smelt lovely, and had a magnificent pair of norks. Think I used half of my bucket and a half on her.....

I’d go for a F430, 550, 599, Strad, 997 GT3 anyday before I even consider an Aston - assuming he really wants to spend £70-85k.
I’d consider a 458 for £100k if he could stretch.
£50k should also get a 360 F1 which is way more of an occasion than anything else for that price range

Does he want to spend all of the £100k?

Vanquish. Not quite room in the back for an actual human, but two small girls would probably be ok. If he paid off only slightly less of his mortgage he could get one without a roof.

The only reason I'm not suggesting the Vantage is in case he does actually want to take the nice car and the family to the pub some Sunday lunchtime. If not, he should test the Vantage as well.

He’s figurering on 20k for an amazing holiday an up to 80k on a car.
Not bothered on something he can take the girls in either. His driving is that bad I’m not sure they want to go in any car he drives! :D

I deleted my last post because I noticed his budget is less than I assumed. If an Aston tickled his fancy he could get a cracking V12 Vantage manual, or a DB9 Volante. The pre-S model V12 Vantages have pretty 'robust' suspension, so if comfort is his thing then he'd need to look a bit later in the model's life-cycle - 2015/16-ish onwards, I think. Of the newer-model Vanquishes, the 8-speed is the model of choice (apparently) but he'd be lucky to find one for £75-80k.

If he can get into a 430 for that, and if he lives near you so Voicey could look after it, I'd be on the prowl for a Fezza.

Or, of course and perhaps most enticingly, a 2-seat Strad.

If he's not that into cars though, a Fezza, Lambo, Maser or Aston is probs a waste on him.

If this is an inheritance from his nan, I’d want to buy a car that was more likely than not to increase in value... so for me a manual Ferrari would be a much better choice than any Aston

on a serious note and with my sensible hat on, that would be a good deposit for a rental property, not sure I would squander it on a car just like that, it's a good opportunity to invest wisely, just my pennies worth

Guess this reallyy depends on his preferences and criteria for an amazing car. I would also suggest if its really a dreamtoy you get into the Ferarri/Lamborghini like cars. I would also suggest a Mclaren but im not sure they fit the budget. Also, with amazing cars you also get amazing service costs, so i would ask him what he is comfortable with spending on the car.

That's a good point, Jon. What's the going rate for a manual 430? That would be a wonderful thing!

if you want a predictable rate of depreciation then an Aston is quite good if you get one on a private sale that's already taken the first 35% hit. Mclarens depreciate as fast as they accelerate, unfortunately, so if it's a Nan-legacy he wants on his drive then a Fezza, Strad or Aston - if bought well - would all be ok. Probably in that order.

He has a business which builds properties, some get rented some get sold, so is covered on that one.

Gotta be over 100k for a manual 430

Nissan GTR. It’s one of the few cars that feels special to both car people and non-car people alike.

perfect, then he has my permission to blow the lot on a motor :D, as it's cash then worth keeping an eye on classic car auctions, might get a good buy, be it ferrari, lambo, aston, porsche, whatever floats his boat
