A YEAR IN MONTREAL

True dat! I distinctly remember an article in Classic Car, some time late 90s, interview with a classic trader, listing his top most unloved classics - they included Montreal, “I could find you any of the entire RHD production run for sale” Fiat Dino “6 grand car with temperamental 10 grand engine”, Citroen SM “lovely but no one knows how to fix them and they’re all broken”. Pretty sure he also mentioned Espadas and he definitely said “any ISO or Monteverdi”.
All of these were sub 10 grand cars even then...As were Jensen Interceptors, which I also loved. I was penniless, rootless, living in rented shared houses with other wasters, and drove a £500 shed around this time, but resolved that as soon as I got the money I’d buy one those cars..... But of course by the time I got my finances together, prices had got silly....

I remember Mike Hailwood’s Iso Grifo being for sale just under £20k. I put the money into a house deposit

Montreal spotting? Just remembered, there was one on the cover of the Sex Pistols Great Rock n Roll Swindle album.... Maybe in the inner gatefold, but definitely there. in orange. it’s in the loft, when I get chance I’ll venture in there and find/ post

Edit:
Sorry I found the pic of the gatefold and posted it, but had to self censor as some of the rest of that pic could be considered dodgy. When I get chance I’ll crop and repost ( and explain..)

I wonder if the author of that article is still around, anyone know his name?

A mate of mine has every "Classic Cars" mag ever produced since when they first started back in 1973! don't ask...
Ok just for you old buggers out there, what car was featured on the front cover of the first edition back in 1973?
And no cheating on the interweb!

I have volumes of them in boxes stashed away lol. I'm not dragging them out to find out though.

That's a good starter for ten and afraid I don't know.
My car has featured in Classic Car and also in Auto Italia back in the nineties, also I think it was on a stand at the NEC in that period too, but I need to research that a bit more.

No worries Geoff! And thanks for getting me thinking about previously long forgotten Montreal memory nuggets!
Here is the inner gatefold sleeve of the Pistols’ Great Rock n Roll Swindle album (with part of the left side cropped off...)

80824

Orange car with girl sat on it, and Swindle written on the plate and the bonnet vent... There you have your punk Alfa.
Why did I delete and crop the original pic you may ask...
The pic is cropped to the left of Ronnie Biggs, (pictured on the beach with Steve Jones at the bottom) so the spine runs through the Montreal pics.
Part of what is the cropped side contains a nude picture of the girl that’s sat on the car and is a still from the film
Strong, probably true rumours if you surf the web, that the girl, actress Judy Croll, was underage at the time...
(And Malcolm McLaren, for the Swindle film was his baby) had other controversy around him in the 80s regarding the similarly underage Annabelle Lwin... whether he used that to generate cheap outrage or not, we’ll probably never know)

Might be worth an eBay purchase of the album to complete your Montreal memorabilia? Pretty obscure this one I’m sure you’ll out trump many with it lol

Btw... I’d love to know what became of this car... But I bet it was a UK import as the film was made in the UK, in 1980. How many orange UK cars I wonder

The only problem here is that, I’m not sure if it was Classic Car, or any other car mag.... Sorry

Thanks, I didn't know about the Pistols, they where never a favourite of mine, going to have to trawl the web now to see if I can get it.
A little progress this week a few items bolted back on the car but not as many has I had hoped for. I will post some progress pic's when I get a bit further.
Mean while pic's of the articles in Auto Italia (July 2000) and Classic and Sports Car (Nov 1999) When was in the previous owners custody.

Is this the one?
Dont think thats the one Geoff. Can sometimes be tricky with Pistols stuff as there are so many semi official bootlegs and stuff that shares names like Swindle or Anarchy.
This is def the one you want though:

By the way... It may be worth also seeking out the film (Great Rock n Roll Swindle film, that is). I might even do that myself. I haven't seen it for about 25 years... Its a '****' film but one of the biggest pi55takes ever and definitely worth watching. It was McLarens thing and Lydon refused to have anything to do with it, so he turned to the more malleable Sid Vicious and Steve Jones. But as it has some of the last footage of Sid before he died (doing his legendary rendition of My Way) its curio of rock history (if you take Mclarens BS with a huge dose of salt). Not to mention Ronnie Biggs in the studio recording a track with the remaining Pistols. Anyway i digress. Like i said I cannot remember if the car is in the actual film, maybe it is? The other pics on the album sleeve are stills from the film, so it could be? Unless they are outtakes?

Another edit:
I did a bit more searching, and found this, on alfamontreal.info (worth seeing site if you havent already, all sorts of stuff on there):
In 1979 UK Virgin used a "Swindle" Montreal to promote the Sex Pistols record album "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle". The Montreal appears on the gatefold sleeve of the double-LP album. (Note that two versions of this album were produced). It does not appear in the movie of the same name, although the movie review published by Mojo Magazine in June 2002 does include an illustration of a prowling Sue Catwoman.

Wow I do actually remember the C&SC article! Certainly remember an article from late 90's in one of the glossies, with a green car. Remember drooling over it... Must have been that one surely. I am epically jealous.. if thats even a word

Things have been a bit slow with Monty, I was nicely getting some bits bolted back on and wifey decided we need the front room re-doing, now not just a quick lick of paint ho no, floor up skirting boards off, insulate between rafters, new floor down, new skirting board on, cupboards and shelves built each side of the chimney breast, then complete re-decoration,
Well just about finished thank goodness.
Back to the Montreal, I decided in my wisdom that it would be a good idea to fit a new wiring loom as the original one is 46 years old and buggered about by P.O.
It arrived the other day and I must admit I have been holding back from doing to much to the car before fitting it, didn't want to put bits on that would be in the way.
Now electric's most certainly are not my strong point, and I find myself looking at it and thinking f%%k what have I done, if you see dark clouds over Fenland and my dog running for the hills you will know things aren't going to well

Lay the loom out in the floor, in the way it goes in the car. Then label where it goes boot, engine, etc. Then thread it through. When it’s in place it’s much less daunting. (You can only see bits of it ;)) just do it methodically, you’ve got all the connectors installed so won’t be too hard. Worth getting a colour chart too, with abbreviations from the wiring diagram listed, remember British and Italian wiring colour standards are different.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.
I am on the ABB forum which has Montreal section, a guy on there did a full colour diagram which he kindly shares, he sent me a copy which I have had blown up to poster size which is going to be hung in the garage.
Luckily I made many notes when I dismantled the car, took many photos, and labeled all the wires, although some have now fallen off.
I am hoping the thought of the job is going to be worse than doing it.
The only part of the car that hasn't been stripped is the upper dash, but guess that now has to come out.
