Air filter upgrade

Has anyone bothered to fit an 'upgraded' air filter?

Seems like a relatively inexpensive modification, made all the more attractive by the fact it's invisible, but,

"Saves weight".....who gives a sh*t!!

"Increased BHP and torque".....really?

Sounds too easy. Whats the general consensus?

Yes, I fitted the BMC. Not because I believe the claims, simply because it was cheaper and more readily available than the OEM one. Yes, it breathes a little better too which is a plus.

I too fitted a BMC for the same reasons as conaero. The filter comes pre-oiled and can be cleaned and re-oiled time and again as per K&N type.

Here is a link that may help regarding the cleaning:- https://www.knfilters.com/cleaning.htm

If you do fit a BMC, once fitted let your engine idle about fifteen to twenty minutes to let it adjust to the greater airflow. I didn't the first time and wondered why it didn't want to rev properly!

Yes I fitted a BMC at the same time I fitted the X pipe. Didn't think it would hurt and would make it breath better with the exhaust.

The oiled filters always worry me as I've heard stories about them contaminating the hot wire on the MAF sensor ?

Now that's an interesting comment, and not one I had thought about. It could be a possibility if someone drenches it in oil instead of giving it a very light spray.

It would be good to hear from anyone who has suffered MAF issues with these filters.

Ran them in my GS, and the Strad one has been in 18 months.

Happy to report no issues.

I believe issues can start if an amateur is over zealous with the re oiling.

I have the BMC in my GS, I need to check the service invoices to see when it was "last done" as the one that was in was knackered, and some fool had rounded off all the fasteners on the filter box

both my QP and Murcielago had BMC's fitted when I bought them. I'm not a fan of any oil type filter- paper filters do a far better job. I switch back to paper when I service the car. I've not seen any impartial evidence to show any performance benefit from cloth filters.

This old chestnut..!
If I ever get to modding the intake on the 42, it'll inevitably mean using a K&N or similar....

The induction noise be the only noticeable difference, if you can hear that over the V8 at 7,000rpm

If thats aimed at me..? I think better access will be a noticeable benefit. And the ingress of water will be less of a worry too. Plus the risk of taking out the airbox on speed bumps will be greatly reduced. Its actually a bit of a no brainer IMO...! ;)

No, not aimed at you!

Know where you’re coming from with the risk of hydraulically locking the engine but the aftermarket filters are still in the same air box as the OEM.

It’s been a while but the 3200/4200 is very seseptable due to its stupid snorkel positioning. I feel owners are just more careful these days.
