Alternator - QP V

The alternator warning light came on and the car was taken in. I had the alternator repaired last year in January, and have only done 18 000km since then which is really not great at all.

Maserati have said it's not worth repairing again and have quoted me on a new one, which is R23 300 (£1100) including fitting.

Surely I should be able to source an after-market Denso alternator elsewhere and get if fitted? I'm reluctant to get this one repaired again to only expire in another 18 000km.

Looks like I'll only get 40 000km out of a new one anyway, judging from past experience. That's really kak quality in my books - how come a Toyota can hold the alternator together for at least 100 000km?

I have just had a new Alternator supplied and fitted.
The cost in Spain is around 700 euro for an official OEM supplied part without labour.
Your quote seems expensive... Is that an MD or Indie quote ?
I still have my old one (see thread) and have been advised to bin it due to forum experiences.

Have to say that I agree with your observations on the fragility of many parts. As you point out other makes seem to be far more robust.

I wonder if it is due to the Co using higher stressed parts from 'smaller' cars - such as the starter motor on the 3200s

The alternator is a Denso part. I've not been able to find a replacement so not sure the argument can be applied?

Any DIY tips on diagnosis and fix for "alternator failed" message. No codes stored on my $2 reader.

The belt is okay and no bad noises from the alternator itself. Willingly buy the proper part if is FUBAR, but can the rectifier gubbins be SERVICED?
Looks quite involved to get the **** thing out, but not my daily driver so no issues it being immobile for a while.

Any issues using it for short drives in this state? Keeping it on the CTEK 5.0 all of the time it is parked at home, so battery is healthy.

Try these guys- I just had an alternator done by them...Came back good as new.
They see a few they tell me, as the diode packs give up..(Is your QP V a 4.2 ?) and start frying sh1t, like the battery !
Im warned that people have tried refurbs and they too fail...but these guys say they do plenty for the Maser4.2 units...and because they couldnt source a replacement part after much casting around- they refurb.
Mine was shot/bead cleaned and came back with a new rotor ( burned beyond a rewind), new bearings, upgraded diode pack, 1 year warranty and delivered for <£230....Pretty easy to fit yourself. Get sone intake gaskets as the intake plenum needs to be removed....
Good Luck !

Tim
Will use the friendly types at contact above.
Have the intake plenum shifted and can get at the alternator. Where is the **** belt tensioner? Is it on the alternator mounting bracket?

It's nN0: 7 - you can get a 15mm ring spanner on it, and use it as a "handle" to release the tension , and slip the belt free....

NB- Make a (mental) note of the arrangement that fixes the alternator. It is designed so that it will aligned with the belt when fitted. Put it back the in the same position...!
