If it was me in your position Phil, I'd set up a new separate bank account just to accomodate this transaction. If money comes in and is still good after a period specified by the bank, then I'd let the car go. Good luck.

Phil, if the money comes into your account you are on a winner. He would be the one actually taking the risk, he will have transferred his money into some one else’s account and has no guarantee he will ever see the car. Would you do that ? If something seems too good to be true it usually is. Personally, to date it seems too much hassle and I would look to sell elsewhere if you possibly can.

No need to set up a new account, your bank will confirm this if you’ve doubts.
You are at no risk.

Passing on bank details is no hassle at all......

Sounds like a variation on this scam to me :

Car Shipping Scam: The Hook
Fraudsters had copied aspects of our site and were advising potential victims that they would buy their vehicle and ship it via their approved shippers, pointing the victim to this so called shipping site which they had published themselves.

Once the seller had been "hooked" the fraudster then sends a cheque to the seller for the cost of the vehicle and, very kindly, includes in this payment the costs for shipping the vehicle overseas.

Car Shipping Scam: The Con

Say the car is being sold for £ 4000.00 and the shipping costs are £1000.00, you, the seller, get a nice little cheque for £5000.00 which you duly bank. The bank may even advise you that the funds are in your account, cleared and safe.

Car Shipping Scam: The Sting
Within a few days you will be asked to send a slice of this money to the shipping agent in order to pay for the shipping. ( the shipping costs of £1000.00) You are requested to send this money by Western Union or Moneygram which you do as you have been paid. This transfer is untraceable and cashed immediately. Meanwhile your bank tells you 10 days later that the original cheque has bounced and promptly takes the money out of your account.

Got to be a scam.

#1. can’t see many car collectors genuinely wanting a 4200 or GS
#2. not viewing it
#3. just too much hassle
#4. I’ll send my trusted mechanic etc it’s all the same script they use.
#5. Add a sob story about Covid-19 and kids

Your peeing me off because cash is the most ridiculous, unsafe route to go down.

Counterfeit, virus risk, meeting potentially unscrupulous people face to face etc etc
The simple answer is within the thread. Follow it or fecking drop it.

the above is just u trying to satisfy yourself.

I no more think he will show up with cash than Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock knocking up a Coronavirus vaccine in the back garden of number 10 tonight. Jeez!

Lots of reasons to suspect scam as have been pointed out already, but for me as soon as he started referring to left hand drive he had gone too far and there was no way back.
Scam for sure - seller beware o_O

Listen, the good people of Sports Maserati have given their advice and I have taken it all on board. Like one or two others thought on here, the guy originally gave some credibility by his Maserati knowledge.
Most people on Sports Maserati, (not boring people like you obviously) are fun people and I am sure would like me to now have a little bit of fun with him.
Please just put me on ignore or just don't read this thread any more. Pretty simple really.
To everybody else, thank you for your advice.
Phil

Just a thought if you are worried about passing on your Bank Details. If you have a PayPal account you can request he pays into that. No issue there with passing on details you may not want him to know. When he sends 10k to your PayPal account you can then safely transfer to your chosen Bank account.

That's a bloody good idea.

Phil, if you don't have a PayPal account you are of course very welcome to use mine.

Even PayPal payments can be reversed. I was approached by a scammer, he was on an oil rig, wanted to buy it for his university graduating son, etc etc etc. I raised it on here knowing full well that it was a scam but the advice was that PayPal too can be reversed.
