Evening all - decided to swap my air filter for a BMC one yesterday - first time I've taken the engine cover off - and found a whole bunch of untrimmed zipties on both sides of the engine bay. Is this normal or are some fittings missing or something do you think? And the rust..... is that normal? 55530

Turns out that I have a selection as well, although mostly trimmed or otherwise more neatly tucked away than those.
Of course, hardly guarantees that they are standard, given the age of my car, but the are mostly identical....

They look to be reusable so probably OEM, lack of trimming is probably Luigi anxious to get home on a Friday...

Yes they are standard - becuase they are anchor ties (they clip into holes in the body) they will be factory.

The rust doesn’t look drastic, i’d get some rust remedy on it, a coat of hammerite and if you are that way inclined a spray over with some body coloured paint.

Blimey that's a bit **** poor for any motor never mind a very expensive one, it would take seconds to cut them cable ties back.

Yes, but they are releasable and if you cut them back, you'd be hard pressed to re-use them. $0.02

Standard from the factory and it stops mechanics hands getting scratched as they can be lethal and draw blood if cut off with side cutters.
I have a special pair of cutters that cuts them off clean.

Untrimmed zip ties are standard. Anyone...except the factory would clip them.

I’ve got the boot lid liner off at the mo and couldn’t help myself and had to finish what Modena didn’t.

Anybody who's worked with me knows my OCD regarding untrimmed cable ties. They must be trimmed with end snips not side cutters and all the ties should be wrapped the same way along the loom.

Untrimmed under the rear shelf too.

That rust isn't so clever, trapped and emerging near the suspension turret.
Clearly not seam sealed at the factory.
You can tidy up what you can see, but not that which is trapped between the overlapping sheets of metal.
I just drench everything in ACF50, even my relatively new BMW.

Not much point Mike, all this stuff we know now will be consigned to the bin in 10 years time, either with emission's legislation or no fuel!

In the meantime though :D

Thanks all - am relieved it's not some cut and shut hangover. Will sort the rust out with Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80
