Ballpark Reg price

So I pass a little Daihatsu copen daily and it wears the reg '7 SH'. These are the initials of my partner and I would love to buy it for her. Two obvious issues are that, I am a stranger meaning that I would have to knock the fella/girls door and that, beyond personal worth, I have no idea what I would offer.

How would you guys approach this, if at all. I am thinking a reg of that length is worth at least a grand at auction, despite any personal connection to the config itself.

It's worth more than 5k. Short, popular initials, old issue date. I think you're talking £15k in today's market. Stupid, I know.

Offer as low as you can of course but be prepared to be disappointed if they get it valued.

I'd say higher than that. Number plates that short go for big money, and that plate is certainly worth more than the car it's on.

I would say at least 10k for that , single digit, and two initials you could probably see asking prices of 15k plus. Good luck though, but I would assume it is a family plate or something if it is worth more than the car it is on.

Thought-provoking to say the least! If it is an old plate and given the car, is it plausible that perhaps it belongs to an 'older' person?
Might stand a better chance buying the whole car .

How handy is it to transfer a plate and would this plate carry any restrictions regarding which cars can wear it?

It's easy to transfer a plate provided both vehicles have an MOT and it's not the original plate supplied with the car. Which it's not!

Cheers, I just don't want to seem intrusive or 'odd' by knocking on the door!
Could be better playing long game and waiting to see if i see the person by chance!

I would just go and ask. can't do any harm. You never know they might not be "car" people, and gladly sell you it.

7 is a lucky number too.
Very desirable number plate.
If on a cheap car usually a family owned plate.

Agreed. I expect the owner has owned it for decades and has simply stuck it on a runaround instead of leaving it on retention.

Guestemate.....£18k

I shall feel the situation out. Were short plates handy enough to come by in years past, i.e not popularised as they are now?

They have always been sought after, but usually they were found attached to a wreck, and to transfer it needed to be on the road. Like everything, and especially now with the internet, prices have risen significantly. You are also buying the right to use the number, not actually own it, ( I think.)
I do laugh at some when they are advertised as a unique number! Surely that is the point lol.
