No - not baffling. I’ve had 2 Ghibli’s and 2 Cups and driven over 100k miles in them. And in my opinion (which is all this is), paying in the region of £50k for a Cup makes no sense. It simply is not that good a car. There are way better cars (including Maseratis) at that that price bracket and below. A late GranTurisimo Sport being just one.
But of course, I’m perfectly happy for other people to think differently and to spend their own money however they wish.
There’s not much that drives in a similar manner to the Ghibli Cup, however. It has a distinct set of characteristics that you either get on with, or you don’t. The only car that gets close is the BMW 1M, in terms of driving style. It has less lag but not as much steering feel as the Cup. It is also around the same price as a Cup, if not more.
The Japanese twin turbo sixes are more in the GT realm, I’ve found. And also £40k-50k these days.

Other than the Skylines, which are £50-500k. And 4wd.

That’s a fair reply and I get where you are coming from. The more constructive opinions the better :):)

Many cars that are commanding high prices are far from being mechanical masterpieces or driving heroes, but still command a high price. Partially driven by emotion, but also desirability which can come in many forms.

A friend of mine bought a Clio V6 around a year ago, mainly because it’s a car he had always desired to own. Compared to other cars it may not be as dynamically capable, but it’s unique looks and the fact that Renault built it structurally different to the rest of the Clio range, differentiates it from the norm. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s a stunning car and has real presence.

There’s very few cars that have had significant price rises over the last few years that I think are worth it, perhaps the Diablo and Testarossa, but most of the classic/collector cars now that you see are just not worth it in my opinion. £0.5m for a road going 70s 911 is just daft, when they were £40k that was about right. E-types, DB Astons, Clio V6, late TVRs they’re all silly money and not actually that good in period.
While prices have risen, as has discussed cars are ‘worth’ what people are prepared to pay for them, and is entirely subjective. I would take a vast list of cars 100-long before a Diablo would get near it, you wouldn’t - and that’s fair enough.

You also have to allow for inflation - a £90,000 car in 1992 would be £180,000 now.

i mostly agree with this although the DB4/5/6’s would be the exception in my opinion. Those are special cars and both rare and useable. Compared with Ferrari’s offerings of the same period they’re still good value. IMHO of course.

I think some of them are silly money too. £1.5million for a 275 seems a bit daft. They made close to 1000 of them. I reckon there’s probably more Ferrari 275 on the road than mk3 Cortinas!!
