The engine looms go crispy with age and the extreme heat. Might be worth having a look at it.

Without seeing a wiring diagram it’s difficult to comment but in general most modern cars have a main relay that controls power to most of the ancillary stuff (stereo, heater, lights) and then their own relays to turn them on and off. If it’s the main relay that’s shorted it could affect multiple things.

As the heater was on even with the key off then either it was the main relay they’ve changed or if there’s be just changed the heater relay there is something wrong with the main relay or the power circuit as well.

Main relay makes sense to me. With ignition off air con, lights etc were still all live.
Dickyb very kindly sent me a link with a wiring diagram which looks like spaghetti to me but hopefully means something to the garage.
Air con relay was badly melted. Maybe main relay permanently stuck open?

How do you mean the headlight bulbs are packing in??

As in they burn-out??!!

Might be worth getting a voltage meter on the battery whilst the car is running; could be the rectifier pack in the alternator...
