Hi,

At MOT, I found that wheel bearings of my 2.24v are starting to fail. Now, does anybody know alternate part numbers for common brands for the same bearings? That could save a bundle.. ;)

Evening,

If they are the same as ghibil ones, then Lancia Kappa ones might fit.

I have a couple of ghibli ones, that did have the abs connector on them, but due to a school boy error...... i snapped the connector off, if they the same you are welcome to them.

the ABS might have differences - I've been trying to find Ghibli ABS parts manual with no success so far.

Lancia Kappa - that is very interesting! Well I believe there is F-A-G part number for all these, we just need to find which one it is!

I don't have it open yet, that is not so easy, there is a special tool needed to open the nut, I'll check if I can grind one from a wrench socket. Its also possible that its just loose and the bearing is fine, just have to find and see!

2.24V has completely different bearings. (Timken) So no ABS-rings (Ghibli with ABS: indeed : rear is ALFA 60814882 and -amongst other brands- Optimal 801500)
Front (Ghibli+ABS) is: Lancia Kappa 46426612 / Optimal 802331

Which bearings start to fail? front or Rear?

I think 2.24 uses tapered roller bearings, 2-2 both in the front and rear hubs. Based on the bearing numbers after disassembly, you should be able to find replacements.

Indeed, although I believe you will find these at a regular bearing supplier much cheaper without the Maserati tax. I've also found the all the bearings and seals (there was one seal which needed more research) when rebuilding the diff, for a much-much cheaper price then via Maserati, same for the front and rear Ghibli ABS bearings.

Rear bearings:
JL69349A-JL69310-TIMKEN
LM300849-LM300811-TIMKEN

Oil Seals:
Corteco 63.5x73.03x5.8 (haven't found part number for this one, the standard seal is half a millimeter thicker. Maybe it fits though too)
Corteco 12001177B, 65x48x10, dust lip (this is very common type)

I took it apart, and would the root cause why there is slack. Its not the bearings!

Some "professional mechanic" used by the previous owner had actually hammered the old bearings out - there is so much burring left behind, that it looks like it forced the outer bearing in ellipse shape. It was weird - there was slack in up-down direction, but not in left-right.

Sheesh! I make always new real pullers if needed.

Hopefully its fixable in simple tools, we'll find out soon. I don't have a big enough machining center to fix it proper...

I've found out that quite a lot of the issues on the Biturbo era cars were caused by 'professionals'... my 2.24v is a prime example. It took me quite some effort and a long time to get rid of all the **** done by 'expert mechanics', and I still have some work to do...

Oh dear me!

I did manage to work that out, just old fashioned elbow grease!

But I'm not sure what awaits in the shadows - I'm pulling the engine next.
