The story appeared to be that they snapped a rod trying to increase the power of the engine.

Eurospares found an Open Cup engine that had suffered water ingress and that was rebuilt and fitted to this car. I am not really sure what is different between the Cup and Open Cup engines.

It failed to sell at auction 2017 /18 there is a thread here i started.
I test drove it 12 years ago but it was up for £20k plus.

IT has no MOT.

Didn't realise Cups were available in this shade of blue.

Instrument binnacle is definitely not from a Cup car, it is from an early non ABS Ghibli.

My understanding is that Cup engines were 2.0 block and pistons, with 2.8 heads and new roller bearing turbos and obviously a new ecu map.

I don't understand the additional value of Cup cars compared to GTs.

Add a set of springs and geo to a GT and you have essentially a Cup car minus the bling (fuel cover, pedals etc).

Although it could be the other way round, it could be that regular Ghiblis are under priced at the moment.

Hmmm... have to sort out the speedlines (why do people do that?). Exhaust is incorrect for a Cup.
Is it worth 15K + fees then a shed load more to get it to proper 'cup' spec and sort out all the other things (koni suspension etc.)?

No. You need to be brave and have deep pockets to take this on.

Suspension will be available second hand
Wheels easy to do if you ditch the speedline bolts.
Cup exhausts sold out years ago.
I think it will need a new fuel filler cap as the key was broken in it.

If the Mrs allows i will go and have a look

On one hand this is probably the one only chance for me to buy one seeing as good ones start with a 5 these days.

However, aside from the work it needs, the Ghibli II-related ongoing costs vs current stipend, and the wrong engine/high miles etc, it’s the likely struggle to offload if I lose my job etc that would concern.

I think the mileage is misleading.

It is on its second engine, and it appears instrument binnacle. I do accept that selling it wont be as easy as we all know about its history, but if you fix the areas of concern i wouldnt be overly bothered

No, and if I was in a position to keep it forever, the romance of restoring it appeals. Alas I’m not, so I’ll just have to go the soft core route of idolising chassis 00400208 or 400200 on Enrico’s site...

Looking at the auction results it’s a real buyers market out there!

Prices a bit better than they were in Leominster the other week but yes if your buying a good time although Sales in Nov / Dec always have the lowest prices.
