Other than storage and height, is there any other advantages to having a 2 post over a scissor?

Definitely as you have full access and height for the underside of the car.
Have used them all over 40 years on the tools and 2 post the most useful.
4 post for 4x4 and commercial vehicles.

You can get 4-post lifts that give you a wheels free option, I guess this is the optimal compromise if you can only have one and are storage orientated over spanners. Personally my only issue with the two post I have is I could use another couple of feet of space each end to be able to get all the motors centre of gravity spot on and still be able to open the doors easily.

You just use a jacking beam. I’ve only ever used 4 post lifts, I like the ease of just driving on.

For working on 2 post is definitely the way to go as you have more access, but I worry that for medium / long term storage having the car mounted on 4 mounting points with the suspension & wheels hanging free is not ideal. I will have the space to have one of each but I still feel 4 post is better suited to my needs

Morning all. I’m really jealous of you guys that have lifts. My back definitely deserves a break from crawling around under cars, but more to the point I went to the funeral of a mate last year. He’d died under his car. Poor guy, and no fun for his wife when she found him. Please be careful out there (Hill Street Blues style.)

I have a number of cars and have use of a lift when I really need one but I feel guilty asking to borrow it. Don’t want to take the pi55. I am very limited on height and space but could lift cars 1m max which would make life much easier. However, some of my cars, 60’s onwards, can be lifted from the sills/jacking points but older ones with leaf springs are awkward and have lifting points at the front and back.

A drive on platform scissior lift would probably suit me best. Can you then use jacks on the platform to lift the car up so that the wheels are free to be removed?

very very risky imo and an accident waiting to happen, A BIG NO FROM ME ON THAT, if you have a good plot have thought about a proper 2 post or 4 post ramp fitted outside somewhere

Wheels hang free on a scissor lift. Engineering out a problem that doesn't exist.

My lift is an Automotecservices and it is a very solid bit of kit.

I’m not sure why you are going for that ramp and then another device to lift it to remove the wheels. If you get one which you drive over it’s a doddle to get the wheels off, or leave them on and do whatever. And save £2k.

I've got one of these:

Also one of these:

I use the 4 post mainly for parking/storage with occasional works when works required lends better for the 4 post.

The scissor is great for quick wheel, brake, suspension jobs but also gives decent height to get underneath to do works. I have gone safety first which was.more important to me. Both have mechanical locks and the scissor I feel happy underneath as it rises then drops back into mechanical locks. I like the full base plate for extra strength/safety.

If I were doing it all again....and hopefully I will be at some point I'm going to do things differently. I would have smaller 4 posts for parking/storage then a 2 post and a scissor for day to day works.

The 4 post if a bit of a beast and has tons of height and width. I'd probably go less high and wide if I did again on 4 post as you don't need it. However the price differential is that much really.

I can’t lift all my cars on the sills as some are 85yrs old and don’t have usual jacking points. Hence drive on is the only option for those.
