So Phil,in a nutshell.
It’s a foolish idea where many people of different poor backgrounds pretend they’re all mates with richer countries in order to get bailed out by Them and a few others so they can keep living their dream until they’re asked to pay for it and then they strike a new bailout deal paid for by the richer countries until such time as they realize they’re the on the hook.
Which the UK did and said “no more”.

My experience of EU so far having worked (and lived) in 6 different states is there is no political union as such, each state had it's own political system, method of voting, tax laws. The only 'Union' I could see was trade, the four freedoms and some top-level hierarchy that was perceived as the Outer Party overseeing all but effectively powerless.

It's the loss of freedom of movement that's screwed me, both for work and personally. I definitely feel trapped in brexitting UK which I why I'm doing something about it.

At the moment, you are probably right. However, there is an intent to get closer ties, starting with the European army. Once that happens each country will be obliged to pay into it. What happens if a country can‘t afford it? The country in question will be told what to do financially and they become more subservient to the ideal. An example is Greece, when bankrolled by Germany, their economy, effectively, became controlled by Germany. Eventually, all tax laws, voting and assemblies will come under the control of Brussels and elections will be held to staff Brussels. The final piece in the jigsaw will be a common language; English was heading that way so it would be very ironic if it still is! If all this sounds implausible, just dig into the European project, see what they want and then draw a line to where it’ll end.

One of the teaching assistants at my daughter‘s primary school has just hit retirement age. She put her house for sale during covid and to her surprise ended up selling at asking price.
You see, she had this idea to retire in Spain. So she’s decided to liquidate all her assets and move there. She completed on the house last month and wired all her money to Spain. She’s got nothing left in the UK and has gone down there in the middle of Covid and a catastrophic Brexit negotiation which might leave her with little rights in Europe.
She’s brave; some people are definitely more optimistic than I am !!

So the country with one of the highest unemployment rates for young people that is at risk of two regions wanting to break free and has lots of non Spanish speakers clinging to the southern coast is more desirable than a stable country with one of the longest records of democratic, low risk existence of any in the western world? Interesting!

Of course she will have a UK pension and will get at least a basic state pension as well in due course. That's her choice and best of luck with going for what she wants but of no relevance to 99% of the UK population.

UK has two regions wanting to break free, or even three...
