Katherine Hamnett on the BBC just appeared to say she was surprised to get hit with VAT and admin charges shipping t-shirts in from the EU. How on earth can this be a surprise?

C
Reading this thread she was lucky she was hit with VAT and not a frozen turkey or leg of lamb.. Now that would've been a surprise!!!!

My brother was mooning over his pics of his holiday in Barcelona from a few years back and how he's gonna move there. I said, errr, you can't now. Dunno which way he voted in the referendum but he's the archetypal Conservative, working-class, got a mortgage, owns a property, Tory.....

Number of people I've pulled up on this very point. I'm going to relocate to France, I'll retire in Italy, etc. They say well we could do it before EU and FoM, well yeah, but you needed either earn shiittloads or have a highly desirable skill.

Things are starting to hit home now so this thread may very well take off again big style when more people realise how very shot-in-the-foot they are.

Of course he can. Same as if you wanted to move anywhere else. Just different hoops to jump through.

So better before though when I just moved to France in 2018.
Previously moving to New Zealand had to jump through some hoops to get my Residency there though.

Not sure I agree...

Certainly to work precedence goes to locals then EU folks, and people who don't need a work permit, so your you every salaried, average educated Brit isn't going to get on that ladder.

To retire there are the so called 'Golden Visas' but you need between 300-500k largely liquid funds to get there.

How would you go about say getting a job and moving to USA? It's possible I agree, but it's not slick process as we've given up re (EU FoM)

Marriage also helps!

In fact, the Belgians have sent me a doc more or less saying they've got their eyes peeled for scam marriages to EU citizens....

My situation now is I can live in BE, work in LU and change jobs but only in LU. Which is lucky really, more jobs in LU, less tax too.

Me and Ms French aren't married but it was so easy for us both to rock up and settle back then.
For no problem as she is a French citizen by birth but I'm totally in the system registered as a Garagiste and pay my way in the system.

EU regards marriage to include 'durable relationships' ie unmarried partnerships.

You're right it's not as trivial, but it's certainly not even close to impossible. I know a two people that got jobs and moved to the US and now have green cards. One girl that came the other way and my oldest buddy who emigrated to Oz. Since returned.

Not easy for the likes of me who hopped willy nilly over EU for jobs, straight in, straight out. I'm tied to UK where the Gov. has killed our industry, Ireland which seems to have suffered from Brexit more than the UK and Luxembourg which is a decent place if boring af. I think you know in my field it's interview Fri, start Monday. That's gone now for EU.

I'm sorry your particular set of circumstances has been impacted. For the record I voted remain, but "I can't" is very different from "It's not possible"

I'm curious if your field existed in that manner before we joined the EU

Too long ago lol! When did FoM come in? 1992 Maastrict Agreement? I'm a Unix guy btw, contractor, bit of everything, mainly AIX and what's left of Solaris, design, build, etc, banking systems. I've worked in France, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Luxembourg now, all as I said, drop of a hat moments. I'd become a rent boy but there's not much call for rent men....

For 10 years before emigrating to NZ in 2014 i was all over Europe working for Toyota and again from the end of 18 and the whole of 19.
Brexit and not one job since and I have kept in touch saying I'm available but nothing other than wishing me luck in whatever I do.

You'd have been a 'posted worker' - I work for myself, cant do that!

I really know these rules from my unmarried partner and EU rights and stuff from back in the day. Too late for that now.
