Broken key

Went to unlock the car today and nothing. Took the key apart carefully to discover pad on circuit board had fallen off as welds had failed. Found a guy with very fine soldering iron who did a great repair at very fair fee. Result!

If anyone wants contact details happy to share as looked to me as a weakness on the key so suspect I will not be the only failure.

Cheers

Keeping well, not posting much these days as new job is keeping me very busy and no home pc so only ever posted from work. Still using gt plenty though and enjoying better weather. You should be opening up again soon no doubt.

Cheers for now

Who was it who could get these repaired, sorry Frank, it obviously was not you. I know you did supply the key rubber buttons though did you not, it might have been Loz.

Good to know there are spares out there... my key did a full cycle at 40 degrees the other day, with spin programme! Just opened it up and left it to dry and all was fine, same battery and everything. Only so many times you can get away with that though...

Hi NFM,
You've worried me now.. Just going away for the weekend so will take both keys to be on the safe side!
I have time to look at the forum as I'm doing the classic male thing of occupying my time whilst waiting for the other half to "finish getting ready"

had this problem (twice), bought a cheap solder iron and did it myself.... the switch itself doesn't see to break it's just the metalic connections (careful when you open the key as the button will fly out!)... tiny dab of flux and the job is done - when you see the button in the key you realise that they won't cope with a "hard press"!

Evening all

Long time away from the forums - hope all is well.

Anyway - went to the car the other day, clicked the key and nothing. So I simply picked up the other key and away I went.

My wife then took my key (no - not to drive it, she left something in the car!) and opened the door manually setting the alarm off. Clicking the button did nothing.

So - do I have a flat battery or a broken circuit board?? Pardon my ignorance on this but any help, appreciated.

Mark, carefully take your key apart and if bits fall out it's unlikely to be a flat battery! If nothing falls out, change the battery and give it a go.

If you lock you car with the clicker then the alarm is set. If you then manually open with the key you fail to disarm the alarm (done via the clicker), hence why it went off.

Open your key carefully over a big table (bits may fall out). As you look at the circuit board there should be two small horizontal red bars, with a weld at each end. One works the boot and the other the doors/alarm. The welds are weak and fail meaning the red bar (which is depressed when you press the key) falls off and hence nothing happens when you press the key button. This will be immediately obvious if it has happened to you as the red bar will be loose. If all in place chances are it is the battery.

The short term solution is to use your other key.

The proper fix is to find someone with a very small soldering iron to resolder the red bar at each end. My guy, a professional repairer, advised the original solder material was weak and he resoldered all four lugs in both my keys.

Good luck. If you are stuck I can PM my guy's details and you can negotiate with him re repair cost and posting the key to him etc. Loz also has a name of someone who does this.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies - I'll give the opening of the key and full inspection to tomorrow. Fingers crossed it's just a battery.

Do I get replacement batteries from a watch repair shop???

This forum really is ace - great responses to such a small problem - but it's an annoying problem!!
