Bye bye Alfa :(

Well it's been 6 or 7 years since I bought my first Alfa, and now it's gone.

A 2008 159 1.9jtdm Lusso, it's been virtually flawless, and a lovely place to be with beautiful tan leather interior.

Yesterday a tourist in her rental BMW misjudged the width of the road and clipped the back of me as I sat stationary. With the age and value of the old Alfa it's a write off. Now the battle to get a decent pay out for it and on to something else.

I hope you fair better than a lady at work, even tho she was stood still when someone went into the rear of the car her Insurance company have been terrible. Rather than sort her car at the other parties expense they are obviously trying to do it as cheap as possible and screwing the profit for themselves..When I saw the repairs I told her to reject it immediately. None of the shut lines line up at all, it was horrific. But I guess you are after as much as you can for deposit / contribution on next car...

Oh no! Nightmare. Hope it goes well, I'll miss seeing her sat on the Kingsway on my way home. Remember and hold out, they are obliged to find you a similar car, or pay the equivalent. We were offered £2250 for the Spider, got £6500 in the end, you need patience, and access to other vehicles. Good luck.

I feel for you Chris, I had the same a couple of years ago when a woman rear ended my immaculate bur old Vectra. The car was a written off but I got the car plus money from the insurance and had it repaired locally. The end result was car still looking like new and £900 in my pocket. If you can't do similar, as Allan says, hold out for max payment.

Tourist in Dundee?

I was in Edinburgh... Well, Ingliston, I was at the airport.
The person that hit me collected the car from the car hire depot about 1/2 a mile from where she hit me!

She managed to land in a building site, with the car balancing on the passenger side, we (some workmen and I) pushed it back down onto it's wheels to get her out. No glass on the passenger side, the interior a sea of airbags, front bumper, bonnet, whole passenger side and rear bumper screwed, and that's before they lift or drag it out of it's location.
I suspect it might be written off too, despite being a shiny 2018 335D X-Drive MSport. Probably something to be said about not letting folk who have never driven RHD before take the wheel of a £40k 300hp+ car...

Spent last night looking at something to replace it, with a budget up to around £10k, not much is really appealing tbh, I suspect it might well end up being another Alfa, this time, a Giulietta

Wow. I had a 535d once it flew. Smaller car, newer version of the engine and just out of the airport and possibly not used to RHD...as you say.

I have a 530d and don't need a 535d. I find myself using the limiter to make sure i'm not cruising down the motorway at north of 100 just because it's got so much torque that you don't really notice the difference between 70 and much higher!

I hope she paid for the extended insurance option!

I planned on doing that to mine but 1) the wife stole it and uses it most days and 2) it really doesn't need more power as a daily driver. Originally, I thought that if the 530d was lacking power I would remap it once the warranty expired but I can't see the point now. I recently bought a high spec limited edition Works Mini as a daily so if i'm going to spend on anything, it will be that.

So... I guess I should update.

Everything is settled now, my insurance company actually managed to offer me a settlement that I didn't have to argue with.

Firstly, here she is, looking a little sorry for herself. It's almost criminal that so little can write off these beautiful cars, but they are old and not that valuable.

If you look at the shut line with the door, and the light / shadow on the horizontal line through the door and rear wing, you can see the whole rear wing has been shunted forward. The wheel is also sitting squint, and the rim is shattered at the end and missing bits.

Again, from behind you can see the shut line against the boot indicating the wing has been pushed in as well as forward, and that the door is pushed out slightly by the wing - it hasn't been opened at this point.

Finally, well, speaks for itself perhaps!

So, what's next?
Well, following the (polarising) Cooper S courtesy car, I loved it so much that I looked and looked until I found one for myself.

It's red with a black roof and stripes, and a John Cooper Works pack, meaning it has more aggressive bumpers etc. and from straight on in front or behind will look pretty similar to Outrun's car, just in a different colour.
Side on, well, it has slightly more awkward proportions due to being a 5 door.
It's worlds apart from the Alfa, being obviously smaller, faster, lighter.
I'll stick some photos up when I get it, for now, it's with the dealer having a couple of bits sorted out to make it right before I get it.

That's great news that the insurance company has come up trumps right off the bat. Hopefully you don't have to look too long to find a good replacement. :auto14:
