I can still remember a Peugeot dealer telling me my pads and discs were 70% worn and they recommended replacement. I said I would need them to retain the parts so I could return them to the factory and find out what was wrong with the other 30% - I did another 30k on the discs

The shockers thing happened to a work colleague of mine when his car was in for tyres , so he paid to have them replaced, unfortunately for this particular high street outfit they spun the exact same yarn 4 months later at mot time, again he said go ahead , then refused to pay for the work or parts when he went to pick the car up, claiming his 6 months statutory rights. The guy's face was a picture, well played I said lol.

I've since learned:

The MOT was booked by my daughter-in-law who dropped the car off, so presumably they didn't expect to hear from her hubby later on.
When said son finally went to collect the newly serviced car with the newly issued MOT Pass, he was told that two of the shocks had failed and the Traction Control light was flashing on and off so they needed to carry out a further diagnosis! He declined their 'offer' and thus far the TC is fine, and the car drives/rides/handles as it should.

The conduct of the staff in that service centre is truly mind boggling.

The MOT is an industry for sure. Best I've come across is Norway and Sweden. You get your car MOT at the government test station. They have no commercial interest in selling or fixing anything.
The worst that can happen is a dangerous fail where you get the garage of your choice to tow away.
They are however frighteningly dispassionate and clinical about it all!
Having said that I once got a fail (minor) for the spring on my tow socket cover having failed!

Thats serious. Just imagine if you got slush rammed into your socket!

The NCT (or MoT) was only introduced in the Republic of Ireland in 2000 or thereabouts. Before that, you would see every kind of sh1tbox you can imagine on public roads in Northern Ireland, the drivers having crossed the border. This used to drive the RUC nuts, because the only recourse if you stopped a genuinely dangerous car, was either to issue a fixed penalty ticket, which you knew would never be paid, or arrest the driver/owner and throw them in police cells to appear in the Magistrate's Court the next week day morning. Which would create a lot of paperwork, for what everyone else would consider a relatively minor offence. This was at the height of The Troubles.
If the driver failed the attitude test. In other words, was gobby to the police on the scene, there was one other recourse. A suitably qualified officer was empowered to dismantle a car, at the roadside, where he reasonably suspected that multiple faults existed. There was no obligation for police to reassemble the car afterwards.
This could be done by a Constable on his own authority. I heard of it being done. By guys that I worked with. But I only witnessed it once. In the interests of brevity, I'll skip the details. Suffice to say, the driver thoroughly deserved it and photographs of his face, taken as he watched his car being dismantled, which we hung on the briefing room wall, made us smile every time we assembled to start a shift.

My Iveco pickup was 2 years old, red check brakes light came on , still under warranty so I took it to them , in the workshop for 15 minutes

Needs discs and pads on the back

why the light was red to let you know the pads were low they couldn't answer but helpfully as they had the parts in stock they could do it straight away for £700 + vat which I declined

Took it to the mechanic I use who measured the discs which were fine , fitted new pads, charged me £70 , about 18 months later the discs and pads were changed for under £300

They're all at it ,I imagine they're used to ringing somebody in an office 300 miles away , OK just fix it

Fortunately you have highlighted it is not Halfords, as I have booked our daily runner (a merc GLA) in for a Major B service. MB Main Dealer wants £500 for a B service on a GLA (I wonder how much it would be on a more high end model).

Anyway, booked it into Halfords for less than half of the cost charged by MB.

I have had only good experience with halfords over the years, including MOT for my MC Stradale as well, and they never charged me anything extra for MOT. Oh well, partly because I keep my car in tip top condition...

It is pity that we can't include the name of the bad apples in the industry on this forum.

Similar story with my Cooper S. Bought it as an approved used car from a main dealer. Drove it about 1,000 miles and then had a red light on the dash while on holiday. Still had a bunch of hotels booked across the country and was panicked about the red light, so popped into a Mini main dealer in Manchester to get it sorted. £350 for rear pads.

I complained to the dealer, didn't want to know, approved used means they have a certain level of pads left, which coincides with an amber light on the car that was never shown, so I presume either disabled or cleared by the dealer. Odd that the service prior to sale didn't pick up on the pads needing done isn't it...

When it went back in for service (as it has a service contact), they told me it needed front discs and pads. I checked and did them myself for about 1/8th of the cost!

Still better than when they disconnected the wire from the rear wiper motor and tried to charge me £1,000 for a new main control board to fix it.
Stranger still when I reconnected it and a year later, and it worked. It's still working fine, who'd have guessed it!

When you find a mechanic you can trust it makes it much less stressful , I'm gutted to have lost mine , he gave up just before the pandemic

A few weeks ago on my Ducato some bolts that hold a bracket on snapped which threw the pas pump belt off

AA took me to an approved garage where the bill came to £469 for 3 bolts ,a belt tensioner , belt and some PAS fluid

They did say if it'd stripped the threads in the block it'll need a new engine

Really , well it might need one but it won't be getting one , it'll be going to the scrapyard , so it turned out the threads were ok :D

Our mechanic is excellent. If anyone needs Italian stuff looked at in Essex, let me know.

I appear to have stumbled upon an excellent Bentley / Porsche / Merc expert as well

As part of any service you should strip clean the brakes so pads being no more than say £35 there should be no labour charge to put new ones in.

Shocking

Had a similar thing today with Audi on my Dad’s car.

I called them, gave them the reg, asked them to check the records (no service book with Audi these days) and give me a price. They gave me the oil service price, then when they had it they called him and told him it also needed an inspection service, a new tyre and rear pads. £360. He, correctly, told them to stuff it.

I then rang the service department and asked them what was included in the £200+ inspection service, over and above the oil service they quoted. They said, we check spark plugs and pollen filter and “stuff like that”. I calmly explained that if they can’t tell me what they are doing, I can’t give them the go ahead. They have promised to send me an email with the detail as “they don’t know” what is in the inspection service.

Shysters.

Similar with my wife's Audi - in for brake pads at a local Audi dealership. Nice little video to show "slight" lipping on the front disks and "some" corrosion and scoring on the rears - "we recommend replacement of both". Offer politely declined by Lisa, who had seen them coming.

Then to add insult, they had only got front pads in (despite it being a pre-booked job) and then the rear pads "were not on the van" the next day either. So the car will now be with them for the week as the next time I can go up there is the weekend en route to get our Covid jabs. (Of course in these times of Covid you cannot wait while the work is done and they also wouldn't provide a courtesy car). Lisa's now tracked down the nearest independent Audi specialist and won't be going back to the dealer.

My local 2-bloke MOT centre ALWAYS fully explains and SHOWS me anything they think is a problem. Last time they took the trouble to put the QP back on the ramp to show me the suspension bush issues. They can do repairs, but for difficult stuff I go to Migliore in Bromsgrove and for simple stuff I go to the garage literally next door. Last time the MOT guy walked over to show the repair guy exactly what the issue was and which parts were needed. I think these small local firms range from thieves to saints, whereas the big chains are all chancers to some extent.

My worst experience was Ftech, who billed me to replace droplinks as part of some suspension work, and then at the next service (a year later) showed me that my droplinks were very old and knackered and needed replacing very soon. I nearly said 'ok, let's book it in' but fortunately they went bust before I could make that mistake.

A couple of years ago, my local tyre guy put the winter tyres on and told me when I collected the car that the summer rears were 'worn out' I insisted on seeing them, and he very reluctantly produced them from 'out the back', they were clearly good for another season. We had a bit of a row and I've never gone back. He retired to a mansion last year.
