Car storage options

All,

I have just received an invitation to register to store my cars at Goodwood.

At the moment they are asking for expressions of interest with an outline of the services offered. I anticipate it will not be the cheapest option,, but it does look comprehensive.

This got me thinking that other members may be considering storage option, but may appreciate some forum knowledge.

Please don't respond if it's just a comment that the cars like to be driven, or they are fine on the drive... yada yada... opinions are of little long term use.

So presently I use a local to me, service from https://cross-country.co/storage/.

Silver package is £45 per week plus VAT and it has served me well the last couple of years.

Before that I used the Classic Motor Hub at Bidbury, but distance and cost made it less appealingly over time.

Any other members with recommendations for others??

I'm not sure of your exact location, but the average price I've found is £35/week , secure and on trickle charger.

Went to an open day with these guys near me (SHY Automotive). in Sussex just off the M23. It’s a new business started by ex Lloyds underwriters who have focussed on fire safety and security given their previous roles insuring fine art, jewellery and classic cars for high net worth individuals. They are car collectors themselves also. The facility was grade A with an amazing stacking system for cars and individual fire suppression systems for each car. Guessing it won’t be cheap however as we didn’t get into prices but they’ve invested what looks like many millions in the building and rack system.

£2,000 a year to store your Veyron probably seems like nothing, but £2,000 a year to store your 3200 surely feels ruinous.
You would think that there would be a mid-priced option.... "The barn is fairly dry, with not many pigeons, and you can plug in a trickle charger if you want. If the barn catches fire, we will try to get some of the cars out if we can."

I looked into this a few years ago security and insurance is the biggest issue hence the pricing.

Over here no one would pay to store a car there are so many farm buildings available, my local mechanic stores 2 of mine free of charge and has already agreed to take two more whilst we build the garage

I looked at storage locally to me - was around £150-200 and of various quality and most had waiting lists. On those prices what you're paying seems ok. In the end I walked around the local area and knocked on a few doors about their garage. Found a lady with no car and a lovely garage and pay £80 per month including power to the trickle charger. The advantage is it's local and I can walk around and take the car out as the mood takes me whereas the storage place nearest was still 20mins drive. Which is ok if my planned journey is in that direction, if it isn't then that's an hour lost.

* having looked at the link most of them couldn't compare to that in terms of quality.

I have a ridiculously huge triple garage (which is holding up my garden on a steep slope) and people frequently ask if they can use some of the space for storage (cars, caravans, timber, furniture, etc...), but when they see how damp it is inside they quickly back away.

This sounds similar to a place I use. £15 a week Inc. Vat.
Completely dry, plus very secure and discrete. I don’t see the point/need to pay more. (Though I don’t store a Veyron!)

Bang on what a mate and I use - 6 spaces in a very dry barn on the Kent/East Sussex border. £3600 per year including the electricity bill. Very secure and very private, and yet 30mins drive from my place in SE London.

Yes, damp and lack of ventilation is a big issue with a lot of garages. Better off keeping the car outside where it’s at least properly ventilated …

I have used Cambridge Autostore for the last few years, Peter, but note that Aston Installations (Tewkesbury) has also started to offer storage via a partner. That might be worth a look for you, given the location. I like storing it somewhere that will handle and manage the winter jobs: service, MoT, any paint pampering etc. Autostore ticks that box (although I have it trailered to Bamford Rose for the servicing). It means that when I get the car back, it's ready for a jolly good spanking.

A Masochist looks at a Sadist and says 'give me a jolly good spanking'

The Sadist replies 'No'

I store some cars as a sideline. This sums it up well, "The barn is fairly dry, with not many pigeons, and you can plug in a trickle charger if you want. If the barn catches fire, we will try to get some of the cars out if we can." J2 M50 5 minutes if anyone is interested.

I know of two outfits in the 'Tewkesbury' area (Retromarque and the guys who did my seats) - they both offer three standards - don't know their prices but message me if interested and I can did out their details.
