More that you're more likely to knock them off, and if you miss the edge....

Conversely, when was the last time you saw a coaster that high? ;)

I agree, I have a chunky coaster about 12mm high next to my bed and many a time I have spilt a glass of water if I use a “highball” glass, half in half off then out of bed and mopping up the floor.

I think at 12mm thickness you're beginning to encroach on 'table mat' territory probably to avoid such mishaps. With the new mk2 thinner coasters I could possibly compliment with a set of full thickness table mats. What a fascinating thread this has turned out to be :)
The Pepsi Max coaster at Blackpool is awesome btw....and do garden rollers really make a difference to the lawn - always fancied one...
